What Causes a Tooth Abscess?

If you experience throbbing pain in your tooth or gums that will not go away or oral sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, you may have developed what is called a tooth abscess. An abscessed tooth is a painful infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and the tooth that is typically caused by severe tooth decay. The good news is that it can be prevented and treated. At Southern Cross Family Dental depending on the type of abscess that is present, treatment may include drainage, antibiotics, and/or endodontic therapy.

Dental abscesses may range from mild to severe. If the abscess has spread to a superficial area, there is typically tenderness to the touch of the infected area. Most abscesses are painful, so people usually seek treatment immediately. If the infection is not treated, it can damage the surrounding bone and teeth. Daily brushing and flossing along with regular dental checkups can prevent tooth decay and dental abscess.

Nutrition and Dental Health

At Southern Cross Dental, we may not be able to monitor your diet, but we can educate you on how nutrition and dental health go hand-in-hand. Diet plays a major role in dental decay, because what you eat and how frequently you consume food and beverages can cause bacteria in the mouth to convert sugars and carbohydrates to acids. These acids attack the enamel on teeth, starting the decay process. The more often you eat and snack, the more frequently you expose your teeth to the cycle of decay.

The best thing you can do to prevent tooth decay is when snacking, select foods from the five food groups. The best food choices for the health of your mouth include cheeses, chicken or other meats, nuts, and milk. These foods are thought to protect tooth enamel by providing the calcium and phosphorus needed to remineralize teeth. Other food choices include firm/crunchy fruits and vegetables. These foods have a high water content, which dilutes the effects of the sugars they contain, and stimulates saliva flow to wash away food particles and acid.

If you have further questions about the relation between nutrition and dental health, give us a call. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call our office at 719-471-1717.

Is Your Brushing Routine an Effective One?

When you don’t brush your teeth, all of the food you ate from the night before sticks to them and forms into plaque. Plaque makes teeth feel “fuzzy” to the tongue and over a period of time, if left untreated, develops on the tooth roots under the gum causing breakdown of the bone supporting the tooth. At Southern Cross Dental, we want you to have the healthiest “plaque-free” smile feasibly possible and you can begin by utilizing these effective brushing tips the next time you practice proper oral hygiene.

  • Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.

  • Move the brush back-and-forth gently in short strokes.

  • Brush the outer surfaces, the inside surfaces and the chewing surfaces of all teeth.

  • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh and don’t forget to floss!

If you desire a more effective brushing routine and have any further questions, give us a call. What is Xylitol and How Does it Help Teeth?

At Southern Cross Dental, we want you to know that the benefits for xylitol are numerous, but here we will explain a few. Xylitol is a naturally occurring carbohydrate, which looks and tastes just like regular table sugar and is widely found in nature as well as most of the fruits and vegetables that we eat on a daily basis. Xylitol can benefit dental patients who have dry mouth, and can also help protect teeth from demineralization in patients who are low risk or prefer not to use fluoride.

Xylitol is a natural ingredient in sugar free chewing gums, candies, mints, diabetes friendly foods and oral care products. It also reduces the acidity of saliva, which helps to fight acid-driven degradation of tooth enamel. Xylitol stimulates salivary flow, allowing calcium and phosphate to be deposited into the enamel to keep the enamel strong. Xylitol starves harmful bacteria in the mouth, reducing plaque buildup and tooth decay. This prevents dental cavities and inflammatory gum diseases.

How to Choose the Correct Toothpaste

When it comes to selecting toothpaste, there is a large variety of types to choose from, to the point where even shopping in the toothpaste aisle may seem overwhelming. While all of the products on the shelf might seem the same, they are not. At Southern Cross Dental, we can help you determine which toothpaste is best for your specific oral health needs.

No matter the brand, it’s important to always select toothpaste with the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. Almost all of the options on the market contain fluoride. Fluoride prevents tooth decay, and actively strengthens tooth enamel.

If your gums are red and swollen you may have gingivitis. Selecting an anti-gingivitis toothpaste can help reduce oral bacteria and be very effective in reversing this gum condition. If you experience tooth sensitivity on a daily basis, you may want to switch to desensitizing toothpaste. This type of toothpaste reduces pain by blocking the tooth’s pain signal to the nerve. For those who have healthy teeth and gums, you may just be looking to whiten your smile. Whitening toothpaste contains chemical agents that remove surface stains that maintain the natural color of your teeth.

What is a Cavity?

Cavities are just about as common as a cold and although they mostly occur in children, adults need to be aware of them too. It isn’t unusual for bacteria to be found in your mouth, however, when bacteria mixes with acid, food pieces and saliva in the mouth it creates a sticky substance called plaque. The acids in plaque damage the enamel covering your teeth, and create holes in the tooth called cavities. Although our doctors at Southern Cross Dental offer a wide variety of filling options for cavities, they would prefer you to avoid them altogether.

Developing cavities is a process and they just don’t appear overnight. In the early stages, tooth decay can be stopped. The best way to prevent cavities is by reducing the amount of plaque and bacteria in the mouth and the best way to do this is by brushing and flossing daily. Cavities caught in the very early stages can be reversed, however, caries that have destroyed enamel cannot. It is important to schedule a professional cleaning with our doctors every six months to reduce your risk of tooth decay.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Eat Cheese to Keep Your Teeth

At Southern Cross Dental, our staff wants you to know why dairy is beneficial to your dental health. There are thousands of varieties of cheeses in the world, which can come from several different species such as cows, goats, and sheep. Cheese is high in calcium and calcium plays a role in the development and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth as well as milk and yogurt. Because of this, you may want to eat more of these dairy products if you desire strong healthy teeth.

Consuming dairy products is vital to maintaining good overall health, and it’s especially important to bone health. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, cheese protects your pearly whites from acid erosion – the breakdown of enamel brought on by coffee, tea, wine soda, etc. Eating cheese also reduces cavities because it helps maintain a healthy pH level in the mouth that is safe for teeth. So next time you go grocery shopping be sure to pick up some aged cheddar, Swiss, blue, brie or Monterey Jack cheeses to keep your smile healthy.

Brushing and Flossing with Braces

Wearing braces means you need to take a little extra time to take care of your teeth and gums. Good oral care is even more important while wearing braces because of the plaque that they can trap. Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO is here to remind our patients of the proper way to brush and floss with braces.

Taking good care of your teeth with braces will ensure a healthy and good-looking smile when the braces come off. In addition to your normal brushing, make sure to also brush along the tops and bottoms of your brackets with a tooth brush. Then use an interdental toothbrush (the kind that looks like a mini tree) to brush the sides of the brackets. You will know you have done a good job when the brackets are shiny and the edges are visible. If the edges are still covered with plaque, you must brush more carefully.

Buy Superfloss or a floss threader to floss your teeth. These make it easier to get the floss under your wires and back out to floss the next space.

While a little more time may be needed to take care of your oral health while wearing braces, it will be worth it in the end when you show off that beautiful smile! Tooth Sensitivity: Causes and Solutions

Sensitive teeth can make you not want to enjoy your favorite beverages and food. It can also make you want to skip your dental hygiene routine. While sensitive teeth may have a few different causes, there are ways to find out what is causing it and how you can fix it. Here at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, we want our patients to know what causes tooth sensitivity and how they can stop it.

Brushing Too Hard: Many do not know that brushing too hard can actually wear down enamel. If you are bearing down too hard or using a toothbrush with stiff bristles, this can wear down enamel, exposing nerves and causing sensitivity. Use a medium or soft bristled brush and brush lightly.

Brushing Too Soon: You should always wait at least thirty minutes to brush after eating or drinking anything but water. Foods and drinks contain acid that softens the enamel on our teeth. Brushing before giving it a chance to harden could mean brushing away precious enamel.

Grinding Your Teeth: If you wake up with a sore jaw, you may be grinding your teeth at night. This can also lead to worn down enamel. In addition, it can cause your gums to recede, exposing your tooth roots. We can create a custom mouth guard for your protection at night.

Gum Disease: Gum disease can also lead to recession of gums. Keep a good oral hygiene routine and regular visits with us to avoid gum disease.

These are only a few of the different causes and solutions to sensitive teeth. If you are having difficulty figuring out what is causing your sensitive teeth, schedule an appointment with us in our Colorado Springs, CO office. Call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our Southern Cross Dental website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

The Importance of Replacing Missing Teeth

Missing teeth can create more than just a goofy grin. When missing teeth are not replaced, they can create health hazards. Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO wants our patients to know why it is so important to replace missing teeth.

When a tooth goes missing, the gum and bone tissue that used to surround it begin to deteriorate. When the tooth is not replaced quickly, this deterioration will cause problems. The other teeth in the mouth will begin to shift towards that open space. This will create spots where bacteria can hide. It will also change the appearance of your smile.

When multiple teeth are missing, the deterioration of the jawbone can lead to a noticeable change in your jaw shape. Facial muscles may also begin to sag, making you appear older than you actually are.

Replacing a tooth as soon as possible stops other teeth from shifting around in the mouth and can help keep the shape of your jaw. At our dental practice here in Colorado Springs, CO, we offer multiple options for tooth replacement. Our experienced dentists will be able to tell you whether a bridge, a dental implant, or dentures are right for you.

Do not put off replacing a tooth simply because it does not presently bother you. Choosing not to replace teeth can create complications in the future. To schedule your consultation with Southern Cross Dental here in our Colorado Springs, CO practice, call our office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Toothbrush Tips for Painful or Difficult-to-Move Hands

When a patient has limited hand movement or difficulty using their hands, it can be difficult to do a good job with oral care. Thankfully, there are ways to make brushing less of a hassle. At Southern Cross Dental here in Colorado Springs, CO, we want our patients with difficulty moving their hands to know that they can still take excellent care of their teeth.

Toothbrushes can be hard to maneuver around the mouth when you are struggling with conditions like arthritis. Take a few tips for picking out the right toothbrush to help you out. The toothbrush should have a handle that you can easily grip. Thicker handles are best for this. Also, look for one with a non-slip grip. This will make the toothbrush easier to control. One more tip is to look for a toothbrush with a small head. A smaller head makes it easier to move the toothbrush around in your mouth and reach every corner.

If you are using all of the above tips with a manual toothbrush and still having difficulty cleaning your teeth, try using an electric toothbrush. While normally, manual toothbrushes do just as good of a job of cleaning as electric ones, for those with difficulty using their hands, electric toothbrushes can offer major benefits. They basically just need to be held in the right positions and they do all the scrubbing.

Do not let painful hands or difficulty with movement stop you from having great oral health. To schedule a cleaning with Southern Cross Dental in our Colorado Springs, CO office, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

How to Make Dental Care Fun for Kids

We all know that sometimes it feels like getting kids to brush and floss is like “pulling teeth”. However, it is an important step in their oral health. Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO wants to give parents pointers on making dental care fun for kids.

To help kids understand how to brush their teeth well, brush yours with them. This way they can see how to hold the toothbrush, which spots in the mouth to brush, and how long they should be brushing for. Kids love to play “monkey see, monkey do”, so they will most likely find this fun.

A full two minutes should be spent brushing teeth. A great way to make sure kids reach that full two minutes is by playing one of their favorite songs. This makes the time go by quicker for them, plus you will rest assured knowing they are doing a good job.

Offer rewards for when they complete all of their brushing and flossing for the day. These rewards can be like picking a bedtime story, getting to spend extra time playing outside, or taking them to a park on the weekend if they complete their brushing and flossing every day for the whole week.

Healthy home habits promote healthy dental visits. To schedule your child’s dental visit at Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Preventive Care and Oral Hygiene

If you don’t take care of your teeth and properly maintain your oral health, you may find yourself spending thousands of dollars in restorative dental care down the line. Although we love to see you here at Southern Cross Dental, we want to save you money and help you keep your teeth for life. When the dental team and the patient work together, this can help to prevent the need for treatment.

Preventive dentistry emphasizes the importance of ongoing hygiene procedures and daily practices to prevent tooth decay and other dental diseases and conditions. Effective preventive dentistry combines at-home oral care by patients with chairside treatments and counseling by dental professionals. The American Dental Association recommends a minimum of two dental checkups each year for professional cleaning and management of any developing conditions. Obeying this recommendation can help our dentists stop dental disease in the earliest stages, protecting your smile and your wallet.

Dental Sealants in Colorado Springs, CO

finallogo.png

Have you ever wondered if there was a way to seal out tooth decay? At Southern Cross Dental we utilize dental sealants as a barrier to prevent cavities. Typically, children should get sealants on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as teeth come in. In this way, the sealants can protect the teeth through the cavity-prone years of ages 6-14. However, adults can receive sealants too, so don’t forget to ask about them during your next appointment.

Sealants are easy for the dentist to apply. The sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Sealants can protect teeth from decay for up to 10 years, but they need to be checked for chipping or wearing at regular dental check-ups. Dental sealants can be replaced as necessary, but are only effective for the tooth they are applied on.

For more information on dental sealants, give us a call today or visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

Benefits of a Tongue Scraper

At Southern Cross Dental, we want you to have the freshest breath on the block. If you’ve ever looked at your tongue in a mirror, you may or may not see a colored film on it. If your tongue is pink, then congratulations! That means you are cleaning your tongue properly. However, if build-up is there, it’s time to invest in a tongue scraper.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), bad breath affects up to 50% of the adult population. Bad breath can be the result of conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, diabetes, and liver or kidney problems, but more often than not, it’s a direct result of what’s going on in your mouth –or what’s not going on. A tongue scraper (tongue cleaner or tongue brush) is an oral hygiene device designed to clean off bacteria, food debris, fungi, and dead cells from the surface of your tongue. Using a tongue scraper is easy: simply place it toward the back of your tongue, and drag it forward toward the tip of your tongue. Then begin to reap the benefits of fresh breath, improved ability to taste and most importantly, improved dental health.

Are You Flossing Properly?

Flossing is an essential part of the tooth-cleaning process because it removes plaque from between the teeth and at the gumline. Here at Southern Cross Dental we want you to get the most out of your oral hygiene routine, which is why we want to be sure that when you floss, you are doing it properly.

If you eat a meal and experience pain in your gums shortly after, you probably have some food stuck in your teeth that you need to remove. Dental floss dislodges food particles trapped between the teeth and under the gums where the toothbrushes can’t reach. To receive maximum benefits from flossing, it is best to use the following proper technique.

  •  Starting with about 18 inches of floss, wind most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with.

  • Holding the floss tightly between your thumbs and index fingers, slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth.

  • Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth, making sure you go beneath the gumline.

  • Use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.

For more information on maintaining proper oral hygiene give us a call today or visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

Are Dental X-rays Safe?

Dental X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool when helping Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS, at Southern Cross Dental detect damage and disease not visible during a regular dental exam. How often X-rays should be taken depends on your present oral health, your age, your risk for disease, and any signs and symptoms of oral disease. Dental X-ray exams are safe; however, they do require very low levels of radiation exposure, which makes the risk of potentially harmful effects very small.

Dental X-ray tools and techniques are designed to limit the body’s exposure to radiation and every precaution is taken to ensure that radiation exposure is As Low As Reasonable Achievable (the ALARA principle). A leaded apron minimizes exposure to the abdomen and may be used when it will not interfere with the acquisition of the dental radiograph.

If you are concerned about radiation exposure due to X-rays, next time you need a dental x-ray don’t be afraid to ask questions. What is a Dental Implant Procedure Like?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. At Southern Cross Dental, the dental implant procedure is a team effort between you and Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS. Depending on your specific condition and the type of implant chosen, here at Southern Cross Dental we will create a treatment plan tailored to meet your needs.

The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months. X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place. With other implants the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time.

If you are considering dental implants, schedule a consultation to discuss your options. To learn more about dental implants, recovery, and other services offered at Southern Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS, call 719-471-1717.

Different Types of Dental Mouthguards

Mouth guards should be used by anyone – children and adults – who play contact sports such as football, boxing, soccer, ice hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey. However, even participating in noncontact sports (gymnastics) and any recreational activity (skateboarding, mountain biking) that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth would benefit from wearing a protective mouthguard as well. At Southern Cross Dental, Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS, offer a variety of mouthguards to fit your needs.

Though there are literally thousands of mouth guard brands, most brands fall into three major categories: stock mouth guards, boil and bite mouth guards, and customized mouth guards. Stock mouth guards can be bought directly off the shelf and immediately fitted into the mouth. The fit is universal (one-size-fits-all), meaning that the mouth guard doesn’t adjust. Boil and bite mouth guards are usually made from thermoplastic and are easily located at most sporting goods stores. First, the thermoplastic must be immersed in hot water to make it pliable, and then it must be pressed on the teeth to create a custom mold. Customized mouth guards offer the greatest degree of protection and are custom-made by the dentist. First, the dentist makes an impression of the teeth using special material, and then the mouth guard is constructed over the mold.

If you have questions or concerns about choosing a mouth guard please contact our office or visit www.southerncrossfamilydental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS, at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

How to Select the Best Toothbrush

With so many shapes, sizes and styles of toothbrushes on the market, deciding which kind to buy can be confusing. There are certain characteristics that you should look for in whatever toothbrush you choose, regardless of whether it is manual or powered. At Southern Cross Dental, Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS want you to consider some general tips next time you take a walk down the toothbrush aisle.

Small brush head and well-designed bristles are important. Choose a toothbrush with a small brush head and a bristle design that helps you to get to the hard to reach places of your mouth. Your toothbrush should also have soft bristles that are gentle on your teeth and gums. Another essential feature is a comfortable handle. Many toothbrushes have non-slip grips which make them easy to use even if wet. A worn toothbrush can damage gum tissue, so be sure to replace your toothbrush every three months or when it becomes worn.

If you have questions about the difference between electric toothbrushes versus manual toothbrushes, know that one is not necessarily better than the other. If you are looking for a professional opinion, Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS, and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour DDS can provide you with assistance. To schedule a consultation at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717 or visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information.

Tips For Keeping White, Bright Teeth

Keeping teeth white can seem tough when you are brushing and flossing as you should, but aren’t seeing much improvement. This is why Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO wants to inform our patients of tips and tricks for keeping a whiter smile.

To get a head start on whiter teeth, schedule a consultation with us for professional whitening. We have both in-office and take-home treatments for your convenience. Our professionally accessed whitening systems are safe and often result in dramatic differences.

To keep stains away at home, brushing your teeth three times per day is ideal. Plaque forms mere hours after brushing. Plaque is a sticky substance that can hold in stain-causing debris if not brushed away. Make sure to floss every day, as well, as plaque and other debris form between teeth, too.

Dark foods and drinks like blueberries, coffee, cola, and soy sauce can discolor teeth. When surface stains penetrate the enamel and darken the dentin, this is what discolors the whole tooth. It is a good idea to rinse your mouth after consuming dark foods and drinks. For dark drinks, using a straw will often let the liquid skip over the front teeth altogether and limits the amount of time the liquid is touching your other teeth.

To find out more tips on keeping white, bright teeth or to schedule a whitening consultation, call Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Tooth Restoration Options in Colorado Springs, CO

Restoring weakened teeth is what will extend their life and keep a healthy mouth. Here at Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO, we have several options for restoration. Whether there is a chipped tooth, a crack, decay, or a missing tooth, we have options for our patients.

Fillings are available for cavities and also for fixing cracked or chipped teeth. Tooth-colored resin can be used to be shaped over the imperfection, restoring its strength. Fillings are long-lasting and durable.

Crowns, inlays, and onlays are available for teeth that have a bit more damage. Inlays fix the inside of the chewing surface, onlays can fix the entire chewing surface, and a crown is a cap that goes over the entire tooth. These fixtures restore and protect teeth for a long time.

Dental implants are restorations for teeth that need to be replaced, root included. Implants are a great option for replacement because they are permanent. With good care, a dental implant can last a lifetime.

Dental bridges are another option for tooth replacement. Bridges replace a missing tooth by creating a bridge across the gap. They use crowns on adjacent teeth to hold the replacement in the open space. Bridges are a popular option and can last for over fifteen years.

We also offer full and partial dentures. Dentures are great for those who want a removable option. They can be placed conventionally or immediately.

For more information about restoration, call Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Electric Hand Pieces at Southern Cross Dental

Using the most safe and effective technology is what allows us to create accurate and successful treatment plans for our patients. This is why we choose to use electric hand pieces here at our Colorado Springs, CO dental practice, Southern Cross Dental.

Using technology that allows us to perform procedures faster and more accurately saves our patients time and money. Faster procedures mean quicker appointments. More accurate devices mean accurate treatment and successful outcomes. We keep this in mind, along with the safety of our patients when choosing to upgrade the technology of our dental practice. As the ever-changing world of technology advances, we advance with it.

This is why Southern Cross Dental has chosen to implement electric hand pieces to our dental practice. Hand pieces are what we use to drill out decayed tooth tissue in a cavity. The alternative to electric hand pieces are air-driven hand pieces. Air-driven hand pieces were louder, vibrated more, and were slower. Options for Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is a very popular desire for people. Keeping our smile looking good is usually a top priority of our aesthetic appearance. Here at Southern Cross Dental, we offer several options for our patients in the Colorado Springs, CO area looking to improve the look of their teeth.

Inlays and onlays are often referred to as partial crowns. They are made of porcelain and restore a tooth that has a little less damage to it than one needing a crown. Inlays restore the inside of the chewing surface. Onlays restore the same area, plus one or more cusps of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are durable and long-lasting. We also offer crowns for more extensive damage. Being made of porcelain, inlays, onlays, and crowns restore your teeth for a natural-looking smile.

Dental veneers are available to our patients who want to create an attractive smile without major surgery. Veneers are thin, porcelain shells placed over your teeth to fix the look of gaps, cracks, discoloration, and misshapen teeth. They are stain-resistant, so white and bright teeth are possible for a long time with good care.

To whiten teeth, we offer in-office bleaching and custom take-home whitening trays. Professional whitening is the best route to go for safe, effective whitening. Our whitening systems often produce fast and dramatic results.

Rotary Endodontics at Southern Cross Dental

Root canals are sometimes necessary to save a tooth and restore oral health. In the past, root canals were deemed “painful” or “scary”. But due to the technological advances of rotary endodontics, root canals are now usually nothing more than minor discomfort. This is why the Drs. Navid Rahimpour, DDS and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental have chosen to use rotary endodontics here in our Colorado Springs, CO dental practice.

There are several advantages to using rotary endodontics instead of the traditional manual file. The electric-powered tools are made of nickel titanium alloy, which is more flexible than the stainless steel used in manual files. This helps preserve the tooth root by going deep into the canal without stretching it. This means there is less discomfort to the patient during and after the procedure.

The rotary endodontic tools are also much quieter, so patients who in the past were concerned about the loud grinding noises or patients who have dental anxiety are put at ease with the quieter noise. It also allows for a faster process, which is another huge benefit to patients who do not enjoy being in the dental chair.

If you have been experiencing pain and sensitivity to a tooth, it is time for a visit to the skilled dentists at Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Navid Rahimpour and Faranak Rahimpour, call (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Proper Brushing and Flossing for Healthy Gums

For healthy gums, proper brushing and flossing is a requirement. Drs. Navid Rahimpour, DDS and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO want their patients to understand the importance of a good oral hygiene routine and the proper ways to go about it.

When plaque builds up, it can harden and begin to irritate the gums. If an infection arises, this can be very painful and eventually lead to the loss of a tooth.

To brush your teeth, the right sized toothbrush is the first place to start. The head should be small enough to reach every area in your mouth, including the far back teeth. Soft bristled brushes have been known to be the best for plaque removal.

Brushing should be done for two minutes, at least two times per day, three times being ideal. Strokes should be kept short and up and down or circular motions are the best way to clean the entire tooth. Make sure to brush the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.

To floss, make sure to hit each in between section of teeth, remembering your molars. Use a fresh section of the floss for each section of your teeth. When you hit your gum line, make a scooping motion and continue scrubbing all the way back up.

Remember that visiting your dentist for regular cleanings is another important part of keeping healthy gums. To schedule a cleaning with Drs. Navid Rahimpour, DDS and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com.

Intraoral Camera at Southern Cross Dental

Here at Southern Cross Dental, we aim to use to most advanced technology for the most successful patient outcomes. This is why we have chosen to use an intraoral camera here at our Colorado Springs, CO dental practice.

Imagine being able to pick a spot on the mouth and zoom in on it. That is exactly what the intraoral camera allows us to do. The camera is a pen-like device that can go into the mouth and take close-up pictures and video. It can even reach those far back places that we had trouble viewing in the past. The images are displayed onto a monitor so we can instantly take a look and better diagnose any problems found. Using these pictures, we can refer back to them at future appointments, so keeping track of the condition of a patient’s mouth is more efficient.

Since these photos are digital, we can save, print, or email them as easy as ever. This makes patient care a whole lot easier, as they can take home copies to know what kind of changes to look for. We can also instantly send them to another doctor for second opinions and to insurance companies for acceptance.

Routine oral examinations by your dentist are part of a good oral hygiene routine. To schedule an appointment with our Colorado Springs, CO dental practice, Southern Cross Dental, call (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

White Fillings

When teeth become decayed, they're often in need of a filling. Nowadays, most patients don’t want to have fillings that are obvious to others when talking, smiling or laughing. Here at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO we provide composite resin fillings, which are also known as white fillings.

These fillings are the same color as the patient’s tooth, so they aren’t obvious to anyone else. White fillings not only helps the patient protect their tooth from further decay, but feel more confident when they smile knowing no one knows it’s there.

White fillings have many benefits to patients that make them a great dental filling option:

  • They are the same white color of the tooth being filled.

  • White fillings can be blended to be any shade, regardless of the color of the tooth.

  • They are not significantly more expensive than other fillings.

  • White fillings are just as efficient in protecting teeth as alternatives.

It takes slightly longer for the process of white fillings than metal fillings because white fillings are blended to match our patient’s tooth. Otherwise, they look and feel like any other filling, allowing the patient to fill a cavity and protect their tooth from more serious problems.

If you have a cavity and are in need of a filling, call us today at (719) 471-1717to see if you are a candidate for white fillings. For more information about Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour and the services they offer at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Scaling and Root Planing

At Southern Cross Dental, we actively strive to help our patients maintain optimal oral health and retain their original teeth. By offering scaling and root planing to treat early gum disease, Dr. Navid Rahimpour and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour can restore the health of your gums and save your smile.

Gum disease occurs when plaque and tartar are allowed to buildup on your teeth, creating a suitable environment for bacteria to thrive. As bacteria collect in your mouth, they will attack your teeth and surrounding gums. In its earliest stages, gum disease is called gingivitis, but if it is left untreated, it will become a more serious periodontal disease that destroys your gum tissue and leads to tooth loss. If it is not treated, the disease can even cause a loss of bone mass in your jaw.

Scaling and root planing is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease before it develops into a more serious disease. The procedure allows the dentist to clean between your gums and teeth all the way down to the roots in order to smooth the root structure and remove the tartar that is causing your inflammation. The procedure is incredibly effective and can stop the progression of gum disease before it irreversibly damages your teeth.

If you’ve been diagnosed with gum disease or you have red, swollen or bleeding gums, schedule an appointment with our office in Colorado Springs, CO by calling (719) 471-1717. For more information about the dentists and their services, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com.

Full and Partial Dentures

Patients looking to restore their smile after losing multiple teeth find that dentures offer them a great solution in Colorado Springs, CO. Dr. Navid Rahimpour, Dr. Faranak Rahimpour and their experienced team here at Southern Cross Dental offers two different types of dentures: partial dentures and conventional full dentures.

Conventional full dentures are one type of dentures that are used once all of a patient’s teeth have been removed. However, they are not placed until after the patient’s gum tissue has healed from the teeth extraction, which usually takes a few months. During that healing time, the patient would not have any teeth at all.

When a patient does not need all their teeth removed but still have a significant portion removed, partial dentures are a common solution. They are similar to bridges except bridges are permanent while partial dentures are removable. Whichever type of dentures a patient gets, they do take time getting used to since the flesh-colored base is placed over the gums, which can feel bulky or make their mouth feel crowded. However, as patients train themselves, eating and talking will begin to feel more natural.

Whether you’ve already lost a significant amount of teeth or are in need of extractions, dentures are a popular option, and Dr. Navid and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour are able to help patients find which choice is best for them. To schedule an appointment at Southern Cross Dental, call (719) 471-1717. For more information about the dentists and their services, please visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com.

Why Do You Need a Root Canal?

While the thought of having a root canal procedure usually fills patients with dread, the procedure is a necessary one for those whose teeth become infected in the nerves. Besides causing pain, infections, if left untreated, can become abscesses, which are much more serious and result in a loss of bone mass in the jawbone. Dr. Navid Rahimpour and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour can relieve your pain with root canal procedures in Colorado Springs, CO.

Although root canals may not sound pleasant to you, they are well worth it to stop your pain and improve your oral health. While there is soreness after the procedure, it is only temporary and usually nothing that over-the-counter painkillers cannot take care of.

During a root canal, your doctor at Southern Cross Dental will remove the infection by applying a local anesthetic to the area and drilling into the tooth to create an opening in the canal. Then they are able to remove the infected tissue and clean the area. Once the infection has been removed, your tooth will be filled with a sealant and then fitted with a crown to protect it from infection in the future. The crown also helps improve the appearance and strength of the tooth. Once the procedure is complete and soreness subsides, you will be able to eat without experiencing pain and sensitivity to heat, cold and pressure.

If you’re in pain, you don’t need to suffer. Schedule an appointment with Southern Cross Dental by calling (719) 471-1717. For more information, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is one of the easiest and most affordable dental procedures used for repairing teeth and enhancing the aesthetics of your smile. By bonding a tooth-colored resin to the patient’s teeth, the dentist can correct smiles with unevenly shaped, chipped or discolored teeth. If you’re looking to improve your smile in Colorado Springs, CO without committing to veneers, Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour of Southern Cross Dental can use cosmetic dental bonding to give you a smile fit for the silver screen.

Unlike some other dental procedures, such as veneers, bonding can usually be accomplished in a single visit to Southern Cross Dental and doesn’t require enamel to be removed as veneers do. Bonding usually only requires light abrasion and an application of adhesive gel, which helps the resin adhere to the teeth. Once your teeth have been prepared, your dentist will then select the right color resin for your smile and apply the putty-like substance to your tooth or teeth. The resin is then molded and smoothed until it is in the desired shape. An LED light is used to harden the resin. After it has been hardened, the dentist will trim and shape it even further and then polish the resin until it shines like a natural tooth. Altogether, the procedure usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour for each tooth.

If you’re unhappy with your smile but unwilling to go as far as veneers, bonding can be used to improve your teeth effectively, quickly and affordably. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Navid or Faranak Rahimpour of Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call (719) 471-1717. Tooth-Colored Fillings

Even minor smile imperfections like chips, cracks and tooth decay can keep you from feeling confident in the appearance of your smile.  In the past, this was easily corrected with metal amalgam crowns or fillings.  However, the resulting appearance was relatively unaesthetic and often increased sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.  Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour offers a modern restorative solution at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO.  Tooth colored fillings provide patients with a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing restoration that blends in with the natural shade of their tooth.

Tooth colored fillings differ from metal amalgam fillings in that they use a white, composite resin to fill the tooth.  This material is not temperature sensitive and it blends in nicely with the rest of your natural smile.  Tooth colored fillings are secured to the surface of your tooth with a specialized adhesive gel that bonds quickly and reliability.  With a natural appearance and secure fit, tooth colored fillings offer a cosmetically appealing alternative.  Tooth colored fillings are an excellent choice for areas of your smile that may be more visible than others.  With a tooth colored filling you can restore confidence in the appearance of your smile.  Tooth colored fillings also don’t require as much modification of the natural tooth structure when compared to metal amalgam.

Patients that visit Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour leave with a new found confidence in their smile.  The dentists use tooth colored fillings to restore cracked and chipped teeth, as well as to replace old metal amalgam fillings with a more aesthetically pleasing and natural looking alternative solution.

Veneers

If you are insecure about your smile due to gaps, cracks, persistent stains, misalignment or other issues with your teeth, veneers can provide a way for you to transform your smile into one you will be proud to show off. Made of ceramic or porcelain, veneers are thin shells that cover your existing tooth structure and allow you to completely redesign and reshape your smile. In Colorado Springs, CO, Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour of Southern Cross Dental frequently uses veneers to help patients increase their confidence.

Transforming your smile with veneers usually only takes two to three appointments. During your first appointment, you and your doctor will discuss the shape and look of the smile you would like to achieve. The dentist will then prepare your teeth for your veneers by removing a small amount of enamel. This ensures that they will fit comfortably and feel natural. Once your teeth are prepared, Dr. Rahimpour will take an impression of your mouth to be used for fabricating your veneers. The process takes between one to two weeks and is done in a lab of the highest standards. While you wait for your permanent veneers, you will be provided with temporary ones. Then at your next appointment, your permanent veneers will be bonded to your teeth to create the attractive smile you’ve always wanted.

If there are certain things you don’t like about your teeth, you don’t have to live with them. Everyone should have a smile they love, and Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour of Southern Cross Dental can help. Call (719) 471-1717 to schedule an appointment in Colorado Springs, CO. Tooth Extractions

Teeth are extracted for a variety of reasons, including decay, infection and impaction. If decay reaches too deeply into the tooth or if an infection has damaged too much of the supporting bone or tissue, the teeth may need to be removed. Teeth are also extracted if there is not enough room in the mouth. When teeth are impacted, it can cause damage to the roots of nearby teeth, so they are removed before damage is done. At Southern Cross Dental, Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour can help you with tooth extractions in Colorado Springs, CO.

Before the procedure is performed, a local anesthetic is used to numb the area around the extraction site. During a simple extraction, the tooth is loosened with an elevator and then extracted with forceps. Once removed, the dentist may choose to smooth and contour the underlying bone. Then the gums are sutured.

After the extraction, it is critical to keep the area clean to prevent infection. A dry, sterile gauze will be placed over the gums to limit bleeding. You must make sure to keep it in place for 30 to 45 minutes while the blood clots. During the 24 hours after the procedure, you should not smoke, rinse your mouth vigorously or clean the teeth immediately adjacent to the extraction site. Strenuous activity, hot liquids and straw drinking should also be avoided. A certain amount of pain and discomfort accompanies an extraction, and a painkiller may be prescribed.

If you are suffering pain from decay, infection or impaction, Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour of Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO can determine if a tooth extraction is required to save your mouth. Schedule an appointment by calling (719) 471-1717. What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural mineral found through the earth’s crust and is widely distributed in nature. We use fluoride to help prevent cavities. Many people do not know that fluoride is often added to drinking water to help reduce tooth decay. The American Dental Association, the World Health Organization and the American Medical Association have endorsed the use of fluoride in water supplies because of its effect on tooth decay.

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the entire tooth surface more resistant to acid attacks from the bacteria that live in the plaque on your teeth. Before fluoride is added to tooth products, it can be found in water, soil, air and rocks, among other places in nature.

Drinking water and tooth products such as toothpastes and rinses are the most common sources of fluoride, but the most effective source is found only in the office of a dental professional. As part of an oral hygiene routine, it is very effective in fighting tooth decay and pain in decaying areas. It can stop and even reverse cavities, and it even helps remineralize tooth enamel, rebuilding bonds as they begin to wear away.

If you are interested in fluoride treatment, ask Dr. Navid Rahimpour or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour during your next appointment at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO.

Pregnancy and Oral Health

Pregnancy and oral health are two things that go hand in hand when you are expecting a baby. We encourage all of our patients to take good care of their dental hygiene and oral health when they become pregnant.

Most women know how vital it is that they take good care of their physical health, but often don’t consider the impact oral health has on their overall health. A surge in hormones can exasperate the way a pregnant woman’s gums react to plaque. As a result, there is an increased risk of tooth decay, loose teeth, and gum disease if proper oral hygiene isn’t maintained.

The following steps are important to follow while you are pregnant:

1. Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each session

2. Floss your teeth regularly, preferably once a day

3. Visit us for a check-up and cleaning

4. Inform your doctor that you are pregnant and avoid getting x-rays

5. Avoid eating sugary snacks as it increases the risk of tooth decay

By following these steps, pregnant women have a better chance at maintaining their good oral health during pregnancy. Contact team here at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO to discuss pregnancy and oral health in more detail.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is a type of cancer that often goes unnoticed because it has very few signs and symptoms. Thanks to advances in dental technology, we are able perform oral cancer screenings during your routine visits at Southern Cross Dental.

Patients who use tobacco and drink alcohol regularly are at a greatly increased risk for oral cancer. While drinking and tobacco use are most often associated with oral cancer, there is a new demographic developing in the field; oral cancer is now being connected to human papillomavirus, also known as HPV. Oral cancer can appear anywhere in the oral cavity but it is most often found:

  • On the lips

  • On or under the tongue

  • On the roof of the mouth

  • Back of the throat

  • The inside of the cheek

The ability to detect oral cancer early is a great tool for our team of doctors. They are able to identify and pinpoint the start of a potential problem much earlier in its evolution. Individuals who have regular cleanings at least twice a year are much more likely to have potential problems detected early as their oral condition is documented with each visit. If you haven’t had an oral cancer screening recently, or ever, contact us at (719) 471-1717 to schedule an appointment for this important preventative screening.

Panorex

At the Southern Cross Dental, we use panoramic digital radiography to provide high-quality care to our patients in Fullerton and the surrounding area.

Panorex is an X-ray machine that is capable of capturing more of the mouth structure than a traditional, dental X-ray and can, therefore, identify many issues. To take the X-ray, you will sit in a chair with your chin on a small ledge. Once positioned, the machine will rotate 360 degrees around your head, capturing X-rays of your teeth, head, sinuses and bone, which gives our team the ability to see any potential problems and ensure that everything is functioning properly. The panorex can also view specific types of structural problems, including infections or asymmetry.

In addition to clearer and more comprehensive images, the panorex and other digital X-rays also produce up to 90 percent less radiation than traditional dental X-rays. This is because the digital sensor is much more sensitive to radiation than film, so less is needed to form an accurate image. While traditional X-rays are considered safe by professionals, those who receive X-rays frequently or who are concerned about radiation will feel more comfortable with digital radiography.

With our team here at Southern Cross Dental, we want you know that you will receive the best dental care available with state-of-the-art technology in Fullerton. Panoramic, digital X-rays are only one way that we act with our patients’ best interest in mind. Schedule an appointment by calling (719)471-1717. Wisdom Teeth Extractions

At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, wisdom teeth extractions are a fairly common procedure. Your last set of molars to come in, wisdom teeth usually emerge when you are between 17 and 21 years old. Since wisdom teeth can often become impacted, which means they come in at an angle rather than straight through the gums, it is many times necessary to remove them before they cause pain or begin to push on your other teeth.

If a wisdom tooth is impacted and can only emerge partially, it is possible for an operculum to form over the tooth. If this flap of skin forms, the tooth will be hard to clean and can be infected. This infection is called pericoronitis.

When a wisdom tooth is in danger of causing such problems, Dr. Navid or Faranka Rahimpour will extract the tooth. It is often necessary to remove all four at once. This is done either by using a local anesthetic or a general anesthetic, based on the preference of the doctors and patient and how far the wisdom teeth have emerged. After the anesthetic is applied, the gum tissue around the wisdom tooth is cut and the tooth is loosened and pulled out. If necessary, the gums will be sutured for healing.

After the surgery, rest is required, and you will need to change the gauze applied to the incision. To see if your wisdom teeth may need to be removed, schedule an appointment with us by calling (719)471-1717. For more information on our practice, visit www.southercrossfamilydentistry.com

Bad Breath

The topic of bad breath can be tough to confront, whether it’s yours or someone else’s. And, whether or not you know you have it, it’s always a good idea to take steps against bad breath—as they are often one in the same with good dental hygiene.

Most bad breath can be traced to a source in the oral cavity, whether it’s trapped food particles or potent beverage residue, bacterial and plaque buildup, unclean dental prosthetics, gum disease, or even cavities. Many of our patients here at Southern Cross Dental regularly ask us what they can do to prevent bad breath.  Besides completing all necessary dental work and consistently undergoing regular exams, there are a number of steps you can take to reduce bad breath on your own.
  • Drink plenty of water: Drinking water helps flush away food and beverage residue. It also keeps your teeth and gums hydrated, which inhibits bacteria growth.
  • Reduce intake of coffee and alcohol: Both substances can contribute to suborn breath and dehydration.
  • Abstain from all tobacco products: Cigarettes, pipes and chewing tobacco all contribute to fouls breath and other periodontal issues that feed into the problem.
  • Brush, floss and use alcohol-free mouthwash every day: Good oral hygiene controls bacteria and prevents a number of dental problems. Your at-home hygiene efforts are extremely important in keeping your smile beautiful and fresh.

Periodontal Health

Caring for your teeth is an essential part of maintaining good oral health, but your gums also play an important role in your health, and proper care is crucial. Gum disease can be a serious detriment to your oral health and overall wellness, and at our office, Dr. Navid Rahimpour and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour provides the type of regular periodontal care and checkups you need to maintain peak health and prevent gum disease.

With periodontal disease responsible for 75 percent of all adult tooth loss cases in the United States, it is critical to check for and treat periodontal issues when they first arise. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that starts when a build-up of plaque on your teeth hardens surrounding gums. In its early stages, this gum disease is gingivitis, but if it is left untreated, it becomes periodontis. Periodontis can destroy your gum tissue and lead to tooth loss. Periodontis can even result in a loss of bone mass in your jawbone, and heart disease, diabetes and stroke have also been linked to poor periodontal health.

The state of your gums affects the health of your entire body, so come to Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO to receive periodontal cleanings and treatment. It is easier to prevent gum disease or treat it early on than to reverse the effects of periodontis. Call (719)471-1717 to schedule an appointment. Inlays and Onlays

If you have heard someone use the term partial crown, they are talking about inlays and onlays, which our dentists, Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour provide. Inlays and onlays are a dental procedure performed to strengthen a tooth and prevent damage if it is weakened and at risk of breaking. It is a less invasive procedure than covering a tooth with a crown completely. An inlay is used when there is a damage and it must be placed partially inside the tooth, while an onlay goes right on top of a tooth that doesn’t have as much damage to the cusps of the tooth.

Before placing inlays and onlays, we must first remove any decayed portions of the tooth. Then, an impression is made and sent to a lab where the inlay or onlay is made. In approximately 2-3 weeks, the restoration is complete and can be bonded to the tooth. We do this with very strong cement for a stable hold. Inlays and onlays last about the same time as crowns, which is approximately 10-15 years. The better a patient takes care of their teeth, the longer it lasts.

To learn more about getting inlays and onlays from Southern Cross Dental, call us at (719)471-1717.

Night Guards

If you or your sleep partner is suffering from teeth grinding, you know how it can interfere with getting a good night’s rest. At Southern Cross Dental, we offer solutions for teeth grinding using custom-made mouth guards.

Teeth grinding involves clenching the jaw and gnashing the teeth unconsciously during sleep. The exact cause of teeth grinding is not known, but it is very common and occurs in both children and adults. It some instances, grinding the teeth can lead to damaged teeth, jaw pain and headaches. We offer custom fit night guards in order to treat teeth grinding. The night guard acts as a barrier between your top and bottom teeth, which prevents grinding and gnashing of your teeth.

The process of making a night guard is easy. We start by taking an impression of your teeth, and the guard is then made in a dental lab. Since your night guard is made specifically for you, it fits comfortably and allows you to breathe normally. In addition to night guards, we offer a variety of services including periodontal treatment, bonding, extractions and other services.

Digital X-Rays

In many instances, x-rays are needed to confirm a diagnosis. X-rays may also be a standard part of an annual dental exam to determine if any problem exists. At Southern Cross Dental, we offer the latest technology to make the x-ray process safer, easier and more efficient.

Pictures of the gums, teeth and jaw, can be taken using digital x-rays. The images are taken by using an electrical sensor, which is placed in the mouth. The pictures are then processed through an imaging computer program, and can be displayed on a screen for you to view. Digital x-rays are considered advantageous over using traditional dental x-rays for many reasons. The digital x-rays can be enlarged in order to get detailed images of a problem area. They also often provide clearer and more accurate images of a person’s mouth than conventional x-rays. This helps us identify problem areas sooner and prevent complications from developing.

Our team at Southern Cross Dental is committed to providing you with excellent customer service and the latest technology. We offer a variety of dental services including periodontics, endodontics and cosmetic dentistry.

For more information on digital x-rays or in order to schedule an appointment, please visit our website www.southercrossfamilydentistry.com or call (719) 471-1717 for more information.

Athletic Mouth Guards

An athletic guard is a type of mouth guard given to adolescents/adults who play sports in school or for fun. The reason we create these mouth guards is to protect the patient’s teeth and their smile. While there are other uses for a mouth guard, the main function is for protection of not just their teeth, but their head from concussion and brain damage.

Our team here at Southern Cross Dental prepares custom athletic guards that fit the patient perfectly so it is comfortable and offers the best protection available. They also don’t have a weird taste or odor. They allow you to breath better and even talk to your team mate as they do not fall out when you talk/laugh/breath or even get tackled.

There are many benefits of athletic guards, including protecting their teeth from fracture or loss, preventing expensive dental work later on, and protecting the head, neck and jaw joint from damage during a sport. They also give parents a peace of mind knowing their child is playing the sport they love without risking severe damage to your teeth or mouth. Mouth guards made here in our office fit the patients better, allowing them to breathe easier and have more comfort.

If your child plays sports, we encourage you to visit our website,www.southercrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. You can also call our office at (719) 471-1717 to schedule an appointment.

Teeth Whitening

When staining agents such as coffee, wine or acidic foods are able to penetrate the enamel of the teeth, it can be difficult to return to the original teeth shade through brushing and flossing alone. Unlike ineffective, over the counter whitening strips that are messy and tend to slide off teeth, in-office professional whitening provided by our team here at Southern Cross Dental whitens teeth quickly and effectively.

Having your teeth whitened with us provides a number of benefits that change the way you think about your smile. The results of this simple procedure can help you feel more confident about your smile and encourage you to show it off, inspiring positive impressions everywhere you go.  We are especially happy to offer teeth whitening as it prompts our patients to take even better care of their teeth to maintain their results.

To learn more about the teeth whitening process at our practice and to find out if it’s right for you, please visit www.southercrossfamilydentistry.com or call us today at (719) 471-1717 to schedule a consultation.

Root Canal Therapy

Endodontics is the dental specialty that deals with the nerves of the teeth, and root canal therapy is the most common procedure within endodontics. Dr. Navid Rahimpour and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour offer root canal therapy to patients with a deep infection in the nerves of their teeth, as an alternative to tooth extraction. During a root canal, the nerves of the teeth are removed, as well as any other infected tissue. Here is a breakdown of the procedure:

1. The patient receives local anesthesia so they don’t experience any pain.
2. We drill a small hole into the tooth to reach the canal.
3. Infected tissue and nerves are removed using a special tool.
4. Once the infection is gone, the hole is filled with gutta percha.
5. The patient returns to our office in two weeks to be fitted with a crown.

It is important that patients not skip the process of getting a crown, because without nerves, the tooth becomes dead. This makes it susceptible to breaking off, and requiring a bridge or dental implant to replace it. Visit Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO to schedule your root canal therapy appointment.
