Scaling and Root Planing

At Southern Cross Dental, we see patients experiencing every stage of gum disease.  In its most advanced stages gum disease can lead to gum recession and even tooth loss, but we can help you make sure it won’t get to that point.  When sticky bacteria called plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup.  A scaling and root planing procedure is performed to treat this buildup and prevent the later stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planing are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure your dentist can perform to repair your gums.  Scaling is the process of removing sticky plaque from the surface of your teeth all the way down to your gums, and root planing involves minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root.  Once the plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that had pulled away have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to.

Sealants for Pediatric Patients

Almost half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth.  The doctors at Southern Cross Dental recommend dental sealants for pediatric patients to avoid becoming part of this statistic.  A dental sealant is the best defense against early tooth decay, and preserves teeth and tooth enamel.

Most tooth decay in children and teenagers occurs on the chewing surfaces of molars, where the pits and grooves tend to trap food and bacteria.  Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14.  It is best to have a sealant placed on each set of molars when they first come in to ensure they are protected early.

Sealants are applied to surfaces of these molars much like paint. The plastic resin fills any pits and grooves on the surface and hardens. Now the surface is protected from bits of food being stuck, so bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay, and tooth enamel is protected from plaque and acids.  Sealants can effectively prevent cavities for up to ten years and can be reapplied of necessary.

Non-Dairy Sources of Calcium

If you remember those “got milk” ads from the late 90’s, early 00’s, you’ll remember that calcium gives you strong bones! But what if you’re lactose intolerant? How are you supposed to get your calcium intake to keep your pearly whites bright and strong? If you’re lactose intolerant or need to limit dairy, there are a number of foods that can give you the calcium you need. Allow our doctors of Southern Cross Dental to explain what they are.

Calcium not only builds strong bones and teeth, this mineral ensures that your muscles, cells, and nerves function properly. In fact, calcium deficiency can lead to periodontal disease which will require a little more time in the dental chair. The best sources of calcium that are dairy-free include green, leafy vegetables such as broccoli and collard greens. Calcium-fortified juice, breakfast cereal, as well as canned sardines and salmon are other good non-dairy options to boost your calcium intake.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

As part of Southern Cross Dental’s mission to provide preventive care to patients of all ages, we’re educating families about Baby Bottle Tooth Decay. Too often, babies and toddlers suffer from tooth decay on the fronts of their very first teeth because parents are unaware of how they are contributing to poor oral hygiene.

Milk and formula contain sugar which gets stuck on the fronts of babies’ teeth. (Fruit juice and soda are much worse.) This wouldn’t be such a problem if babies regularly drank water which would wash the sugar away, but they’re usually given bottles of sugary liquid in place of water. It might also be less of a problem if they drank their whole bottle at once and their saliva could wash the sugar off their teeth afterward, but they’re often given bottles to suck on throughout the day. These patterns are believed to be responsible for their extremely high rate of cavities.

Parents should start brushing their child’s teeth as soon as the first one begins to erupt, but other means of preventing Baby Bottle Tooth Decay are to be mindful of how long a child has been drinking for and to supply them with water as well as nutrients. Children should learn to drink from cups before the age of two for nutritional reasons, but avoiding tooth decay is an additional reason to make the change as soon as possible.

How to Save a Lost Tooth

Losing a permanent tooth is a terrible experience, but if the tooth is intact, it may be possible to save. To give them the best chance of recovery if they suffer a traumatic injury to the mouth, we at Southern Cross Dental want our patients to know what to do with a lost tooth.

While patients may be interested in learning what the root of a tooth feels like, they should avoid touching it. Only carry a lost tooth by the crown. Some first aid kits have cleaning solution particularly for teeth, but if this is not available, rinse the tooth off with saltwater or milk. The tooth should then be put back in its socket (facing the right way). If this is too difficult, the patient should hold the tooth in their mouth (in the cheek, to avoid accidentally swallowing it). The next best options are the containers included in a first aid kit, and then a normal container filled with milk or saltwater.

Teeth have the greatest chance of being saved if seen by a dentist within an hour. However, baby teeth are not re-inserted, because doing so may disrupt the eruption of the permanent tooth. Implants are also not saved, although it may be possible for a patient to get a replacement one in the future. A lost tooth is a dental emergency, but patients should still use common sense when they suffer a blow to the face to determine if the tooth should really take priority over other injuries.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Hearing the word cancer, especially when it comes to you or a loved one is a frightening feeling. These days it seems that anything can cause cancer, but the risk is especially higher for those who partake in heavy alcohol consumption or tobacco use.  At Southern Cross Dental, we are celebrating oral cancer awareness month, which is why we want to educate you on the signs, symptoms, and treatment for this condition.

Oral cancer typically appears as a growth or a sore in the mouth that does not go away after a matter of weeks. However, we don’t encourage you to wait weeks if you notice a red or white patch of skin that is causing you pain. The most common symptoms of oral cancer include a lump or thickening in the cheek, a sore throat or the feeling that something is caught in the throat. In our office, we provide patients with oral cancer screening to detect cancer in its earliest stage when it is easiest to treat. It’s important to visit us every six months to reduce your chances of developing these symptoms. Treatment will depend on the patient, but radiation therapy and surgery are common methods of treating oral cancer.

If you are worried that you might be a candidate for oral cancer, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

Why Throat Cancer is Difficult to Catch

April is oral cancer awareness month. While screenings are a standard part of dental care for adults, the recent rise in throat cancers associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV) makes it more important than ever for patients to be able to recognize warning signs and to share information with their doctors because oral HPV cannot be detected directly.

The oropharynx is the medical term for the back of the mouth and the tonsils. While cancers associated with alcohol and tobacco usually occur in the front of the mouth and can be detected with standard examination tools, HPV tends to settle in the oropharyngeal region. 80% of American adults will have an oral HPV infection at least once in their lives, and of the nearly two hundred known strains of HPV, only one is believed to cause oral cancer. Therefore, even if there were a test for oral HPV, it would likely only cause needless panic. However, throat tissue is so creviced that it is unlikely scraping at it would actually capture any infected cells before cancerous growths had become obvious.

Symptoms of oral and oropharyngeal cancer include pain, numbness, and swelling in the throat, jaws, and ears. Patients should be aware that any of these sensations is cause to get a check-up with a doctor. Though men between the age of 35 and 55 are the highest risk group for HPV-associated oral/throat cancer, it’s a concern for everyone. The good news is that HPV-associated throat cancer is much more responsive to treatment than tobacco-associated cancer.

We're Participating in Medicaid

Southern Cross Dental is proud to announce that we’re participating in Colorado’s Medicaid program. Though we are a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) with nearly every major insurance company, we are accepting new adult and child patients through Health First Colorado.

Recognizing the link between dental health and overall health as well as the pain and disability resulting from lack of dental care, the state legislature expanded Colorado’s Medicaid program in 2013 to cover adults over the age of twenty. People under twenty-one were already covered for sealants and fluoride treatments, cleanings, oral surgery, and orthodontics in cases of extreme misalignment. But now, adults, too, may get treatments, including scaling and planing, extractions, fillings, root canals, and crowns for a cost to the state of less than $1000 from the July 1-June 20 calendar year. Dentures are also covered and exempt from the $1000 per year cap.

Colorado’s Medicaid program was renamed Health First Colorado in 2016, and it now contracts with the dental administrator DentaQuest for patient processing. People enrolled in Health First Colorado do not make co-payments.

Oral Piercings and Teeth

Many people choose to get oral piercings as a form of self-expression, but they may not take their teeth into consideration before going to the piercing parlor. Piercing your tongue, cheeks, or lips involves greater health risks than ear piercings because the metal mixed with oral bacteria can increase chances of infection. Before having any part of your mouth pierced, you should consider seeking advice from one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental.

Oral piercings may look stylish and we don’t want to hinder you from expressing yourself, but it’s important to know what could happen if a piercing goes wrong. If you pierce your tongue, lips, or cheeks, it can interfere with speech, chewing, or swallowing. Because your mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria, an infection can quickly arise. Other side effects may include pain and swelling, chipped or cracked teeth, or injury to the gums. As long as your mouth stays free of infection and your oral piercings do not interfere with your daily function, they can stay in your mouth indefinitely. However, you should always visit us at the sign of a problem.

If you have questions regarding oral piercings and teeth, please give us a call. Canker Sores

Canker sores also called aphthous ulcers are small sores that form in the mouth, typically on the inside of the cheeks, on or under the tongue, and on the gums. There are two types of canker sores: simple and complex. Simple canker sores usually disappear within a week, while complex canker sores are less common and may be caused by an underlying condition. If canker sores become a cause for concern, our doctors at Southern Cross Dental can discuss treatment options with you.

Though the exact cause of canker sores is unknown, stress and poor diet are usually to blame. Canker sores can also develop if you’ve bitten your cheek, jabbed your gum with your toothbrush, or if you brush too vigorously. You may have a canker sore if you notice a painful, round, white or gray abscess with a red border in your oral cavity. To minimize the pain, you should avoid hot and spicy foods as well as acidic beverages. If a canker sore lasts more than two weeks, it’s important to visit your dentist. You may require a more aggressive form of treatment.

If you suffer from frequent canker sores, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. ARESTIN Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss in the United States. If you don’t practice proper oral hygiene on a daily basis, you can develop the earliest stage of gum disease (gingivitis), which if left untreated can lead to the final stage of gum disease (periodontitis). Gingivitis is reversible, however, periodontitis is not. If your gum disease moves past the stage of gingivitis, our doctors of Southern Cross Dental may suggest applying ARESTIN to the gums, an antibiotic that is used in adjunct to scaling and root planing.

Scaling and root planing is an effective gum disease treatment. In this procedure, our doctors use tools to clean plaque and tartar from your teeth and roots below the gum line. During the procedure, our doctors utilize ARESTIN, an antibiotic containing microspheres that are smaller than grains of sand. ARESTIN is placed directly to your gums and has the power to kill bacteria so your gums can heal better than with scaling and root planing alone. In one single visit, our doctors can add ARESTIN to the pocket between your gum and tooth. It is a painless procedure, with effective results.

If you have questions about ARESTIN, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

Gum Disease and Mouthwash

Mouthrinses are used for a variety of reasons: to freshen breath, to help prevent or control tooth decay, to reduce plaque, to reduce the speed that tartar forms on the teeth, or to prevent or reduce gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease. As much as we love to see you here at Southern Cross Dental it is more important that you take care of your gums and maintain a proper dental hygiene routine on a daily basis.

It is important to note that not all mouthwashes are the same and they don’t always cure gum disease. Many people use a cosmetic mouthwash to freshen their breath or whiten their teeth, but a mouthwash formulated to kill germs can do so much more for your oral health – especially if you’re showing signs of early gum disease. Because it kills the bacteria responsible for gingivitis and bad breath at the same time, an antimicrobial rinse is a great add-on to your regular oral hygiene routine to prevent or reverse gum disease in its early stages.

Our doctors may suggest a mouth rinse depending on your oral health needs. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. How to Care for Dentures

The office of Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs often provides patients with full and partial dentures. These restorative devices bring great improvement to patients’ lives, but they must be cared for properly.

Dentures have neither the ability to protect themselves, like natural teeth, nor the durability of retainers. Lacking the film natural teeth produce, dentures can be scratched by the minerals in standard toothpaste much more easily, and should only be cleaned with paste made specifically for dentures. They need to be kept in water or a cleaning solution when they are not being worn, but they will warp if placed in hot water. Patients should never attempt to repair dentures on their own and they should seek professional help at the first sign a denture no longer fits properly.

Though dentures require special toothpaste, patients should continue to brush their gums and tongue normally. Soft-bristled toothbrushes are the best tool for cleaning both prosthetics and the natural parts of the mouth. If a patient has implant-supported dentures, the abutments should also be kept clean.

Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour operate Southern Cross Dental at 1855 S Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80905-2516. To schedule an appointment, call 719-471-1717 or visit SouthernCrossFamilyDentistry.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Warning Signs of Implant Failure

Repairing implants is one of the most important procedures we perform at Southern Cross Dental. Though implants are long-lasting solutions to missing teeth, they do not last forever, and in some unfortunate cases, need to be replaced early.

Some patients are allergic to the titanium used in most implant screws. This will cause swelling and pain immediately after implantation which will not go away. It is also possible for an implant to be placed on a nerve. Besides being extremely painful, this will prevent the implant from fusing with the jaw bone properly. While bleeding and pain are expected in the days following insertion of an implant, if bleeding continues after the third day, the patient should seek medical help.
Implants should never move. Dentists monitor a patient’s jaw bone for two years following implant surgery. If too much bone tissue is lost, removal of the implant must be considered. If an implant is being endangered by inflammation of the gum tissue, it may be possible to save the implant by cleaning it and the surrounding area, but if an implant can move, it means the fusion between it and the bone has failed.

Take Care of Your Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal. You may not give much thought to cleaning your toothbrush; however appropriate toothbrush care and maintenance are important considerations for oral hygiene. At Southern Cross Dental, we want you to know how and when to clean, store, and replace your toothbrush.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush approximately every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. However, toothbrushes will wear out more rapidly depending on factors unique to each patient. It is also important to never share a toothbrush with someone because this practice could be a concern for people with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases. If your toothbrush comes in contact with another, thoroughly rinse the brush with warm tap water to remove any remaining toothbrush and debris. When you are done using the toothbrush, store it in an upright position and allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again.

If you have further questions regarding toothbrush care, give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. What Happens when Wisdom Teeth have Cavities?

As we age, we acquire wisdom, and the same goes for wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth appear between the ages of 17-21 and are known as the third set of molars. When they erupt correctly, healthy wisdom teeth can help you chomp your food a little faster.  However, if they start to cause you pain and discomfort, you may need to schedule a consultation one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental to discuss extraction.

If you bite on a piece of food that is too hard or you experience a mouth injury, wisdom teeth may become troublesome. They can also become cracked, broken, and decayed. When this happens, the risk of infection increases, because if a tooth becomes broken, it could leave a hole that makes the tooth vulnerable to bacteria and decay. Decay can form on any tooth surface, but when the decay begins to attack the wisdom teeth, depending on the position of the tooth it becomes difficult to clean. Depending on the individual case, one of our doctors may be able to fill the tooth, but even in cases where a filling could be successfully placed, if the wisdom tooth cannot be adequately maintained, recurrent decay can occur. Though many patients tend to procrastinate through the process, extraction is always best to avoid infection.

If your wisdom teeth are still intact and you have questions about removal, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

Inlays and Onlays

Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs provides patients who have suffered from injuries or periodontal disease with safe, affordable restorations. But sometimes, only part of a tooth needs to be replaced. When the chewing surface of a molar or premolar is damaged, it can be fixed with a partial crown known as an inlay or an onlay.

The difference between inlays and onlays is how much of the tooth they replace. Chewing surfaces are made up of raised cuspids and the indentations in between them. An inlay only fills in the indentation, while an onlay replaces one or more cuspids and fills the indentation.

After decayed material has been removed, one of the doctors will take an impression of the patient’s mouth and sent it to a lab where the partial crown will be manufactured. The most common material used is porcelain, which is also typically used for full crowns and veneers. When the partial crown arrives at our clinic, we will be able to install it painlessly. Patients will have to take good care of their new teeth, but should be able to chew normally again.

Gum Pocket Reduction

Gum pocket reductions are one of the most variable and important restorative procedures we perform at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs. While most of the restorations people are familiar with replace teeth, gum pocket reductions help the gums heal, usually without artificial material.
The roots of teeth are held in place by gum pockets which patients cannot clean on their own. If they go too long without a deep cleaning at the dentist’s, plaque will build up below the gum line and acid will stick to it. As gum and bone tissue disintegrates, the pocket becomes looser and the empty space is filled with more bacteria and plaque, accelerating the decay process.

Our doctors and hygienists can clean out gum pockets, but unless they’re filled or sealed, they’ll just become a trap for plaque again. Usually, closing a pocket only requires an incision in a healthy part of the gum. A flap can then be sutured over the pocket. Other times, a gum graft may be necessary. But hopefully, the roots of the teeth will be covered again, and the patient will be in a better position to resist periodontal disease.

Do Wisdom Teeth Have a Purpose?

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties. During this “age of wisdom” phase, sometimes teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often they are misaligned and require removal. Some might think of wisdom teeth as spare tires, because if you lost your teeth, the wisdom teeth would be extra teeth that come in and function like normal teeth. Here at Southern Cross Dental, our doctors may recommend extraction depending on their position and stage of development.

So why do we have them? Anthropologists believe wisdom teeth or the third set of molars, were the evolutionary answer to our ancestor’s early diet of coarse, rough food – like leaves, roots, nuts, and meats – which required more chewing power and resulted in excessive wear of the teeth. The modern diet with its softer foods, along with marvels of modern technologies such as forks, spoons, and knives, has made the need for wisdom teeth nonexistent; however, they don’t always need to be removed.

If your wisdom teeth are still present and they are beginning to bother you, give us a call to discuss your options. Do Pacifiers Affect Baby Teeth?

It’s one of the hardest habits to break and can require a great deal of persuasion – parents often struggle with weaning their child off a pacifier. Yes, pacifiers provide a sense of security and a method of self-relaxation for infants, but the downside of pacifiers is the effect they can have on the growth and development of the teeth and mouth. At Southern Cross Dental, we always welcome new patients, including pediatric patients who have yet to wean off of the pacifier.

Prolonged pacifier use can cause changes in the shape of the roof of the mouth, prevent proper growth of the mouth and create problems with tooth alignment. Long-term pacifier use can lead to a variety of complications including tilting in of the bottom teeth and slanting in of the top and front teeth. Narrowing of the roof of the mouth and misalignment of the jaws can also occur. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends that children stop using pacifiers by the age of two. Up until that age, any alignment problem with the teeth or developing bone is usually corrected within six months after pacifier use has stopped.

If you have questions about pacifiers and teeth development, give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

No matter how much you diligently brush or floss your teeth at home, harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that can only be removed by a dental professional. These bacteria can cause gum disease and significantly affect your overall health. Here at Southern Cross Dental, our hygienists will use professional tools to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria build-up that you are unable to efficiently remove yourself.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, it is recommended that a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months. The professional dental cleaning reinforces the home-care oral health regimen of brushing and flossing and gives our doctors an opportunity to locate areas in the mouth that may need special attention. During a teeth cleaning, our hygienists will thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. Once the surfaces are smooth, polishing is done using a slow speed handpiece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Last but not least, the dentist flosses every crevice between your teeth and may apply fluoride if needed.

If you need your teeth cleaned don’t wait any longer, call us today so we can help you maintain a healthy smile!  To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. Night Guard

Overnight, there are some people who clench and grind their teeth. While they may not know they are doing it, it can cause some serious damage. Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO is able to recognize signs of teeth grinding and offer protection through a night guard.

Teeth grinding can create painful and sensitive teeth, jaw pain, facial pain, and even tooth damage. Since many people grind their teeth while they are sleeping, they may not even know they do it. One tell-tale sign of it is waking up with a sore jaw. Some signs we can recognize with an examination include grooves in the teeth, fracture lines in teeth, and worn down teeth. Patients may also be experiencing TMJ pain.

To protect the teeth from damage and to cushion the jaw and facial structures, the dentists here at Southern Cross Dental can provide our patients with a night guard. A night guard is a mouthpiece worn while you sleep. It creates a barrier between the top and bottom teeth; putting the jaw in a healthy position. For night grinders, a night guard is essential to maintain oral health and relieve pain.
If you are waking up with a sore jaw, tell us. We can examine your teeth and create a night guard for you. To schedule an appointment at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com.

What Are Dental Veneers For?

Your smile is important. Not only does it let you express your feelings, but it has a lot to do with your self-esteem. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, we understand this and offer our patients cosmetic options like dental veneers. Veneers are ceramic shells that cover your existing teeth and instantly cover up the look of dental imperfections.

Dental veneers are completely customized to each patient. They are able to fix almost any dental imperfection including gaps, cracks, misshapen teeth, discoloration, shortened teeth, and more.
To apply veneers, we will first remove a very small amount of enamel from your teeth, equal to the thickness of the veneer that will replace it. After the teeth are prepared, impressions are taken so that custom veneers can be created in a dental laboratory. During the creation process, you will wear temporary veneers since the process usually takes around a couple of weeks. When the veneers are ready, they are bonded to your teeth and made sure they fit right. You will then have a brilliant smile you are proud to show off!

If dental veneers sound like something you would be interested in for your smile, be sure to contact us. To set up an appointment in our Colorado Springs, CO office, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our Southern Cross Dental website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com.

Cleaning Your Dental Implant

Dental implants are a very common procedure to replace missing teeth. Implants are replacement tooth roots that provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. Because the implant is secured within the jawbone, cleaning your dental implant is critical to avoid infection. Here at Southern Cross Dental our dentists will discuss implant maintenance care once the implants are placed.

Cleaning implant-supported tooth replacements are just as important as cleaning natural teeth, as both depend on healthy surrounding tissues for support. To ensure that the implant lasts as long as they should, some special techniques and efforts are required to keep the implant clean and free of dental plaque. Dental plaque has the ability to cause infection in the tissues around the implant which will lead to its ultimate failure. Dental implants require the same care as real teeth, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups.

During your professional cleaning, our dental hygienists play an important role in keeping your dental implant infection free. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visitwww.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

Delay Dental Treatment and Pay the Price

It’s important for people to remember that maintaining proper dental care habits not only reduces the risk of periodontal disease and tooth decay but can also put less of a dent in your wallet in the long run. Visiting the dentist twice a year and maintaining basic oral health is far less expensive than replacing a lost tooth or undergoing an extensive procedure to cure dental disease. Here at Southern Cross Dental, our doctors can teach you the importance of oral health and help you sustain a healthy smile.

Taking care of oral health now can help you save money and avoid paying for expensive procedures later. One example of the cost of avoiding dental care is that oral health problems if left unchecked may lead to losing your teeth. Available Dentures

Replacing missing teeth isn’t just good for chewing food. It also helps you speak correctly, smile wide, and it holds up the structure of your facial features. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, dentures are one of the convenient options available for tooth replacement.
We offer both full dentures and partial dentures to our patients. While it is common to have the whole mouth of teeth replaced, it is also common for a patient to just need a few teeth replaced. Partial dentures are also often referred to as a removable bridge since they are very similar.

Full dentures are created to replace all of the teeth in your mouth. They are created specifically for you. We offer conventional dentures, which are placed after the gum tissue heals when extractions are necessary. We also provide immediate dentures, which are placed right away after any extractions but will need to be refitted in the future.

If you are looking for tooth replacement options, find out if dentures are right for you. To set up an appointment with Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call our office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com.

White Fillings for a Natural-Looking Restoration

When having a cavity filled, it is nice to know your mouth will be back in good shape; however, how does your filling look? Does it stick out against your natural-colored tooth? At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, we offer our patients white fillings.

Cavity fillings of the past were created from silver amalgam and they did not look very aesthetically pleasing. While they did their job of filling a cavity, they left dark spots on the teeth. These days we can use a composite resin that is colored to match the shade of your tooth. They do a great job at restoring your tooth while helping your smile look its best at the same time.

To apply a filling, the decayed tooth tissue is removed and any leftover debris is cleared away. The composite resin is applied to the space and hardened. When the filling has hardened, the area is polished to blend in even more with your tooth. Your tooth is now protected from further damage or infection. Plus, your filling looks just like the rest of your tooth.

If you need dental work and want to keep your bright smile, white fillings can do the trick. To schedule an appointment with Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com.

Denture Pain Problems

Denture pain typically stems from poor fitting or poorly adjusted dentures. It may also be a result of new dentures, worn over soft tissues that have not developed thick, toughened layers of protective keratin. If you are experiencing gum and mouth irritation, problems eating and speaking, mouth infections and/or dentures that move around in your mouth, give our doctors at Southern Cross Dental a call to discuss your treatment options.

If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. In addition, you should never experience pain when wearing your dentures. If you do experience pain from your dentures and this discomfort is not treated by speaking slowly, eating soft foods or using an adhesive, your dentures may need to be replaced. At Southern Cross Dental, we have plenty of tooth-replacement options for you to choose from if dentures aren’t working out.
