Brushing Your Baby’s Teeth

Imagine, after weeks of hearing your baby fuss and moan you finally spot that first little tooth bud popping up through the gums. Baby teeth may be small, but they act as placeholders for adult teeth. Without a healthy set of baby teeth, your child will have trouble chewing and speaking clearly. Our doctors at Southern Cross Dental want to ensure a healthy smile down the road, and since your baby can’t hold a toothbrush, they rely on you to maintain their oral health care.

Starting from the day you bring your newborn home until your baby’s first tooth appears, usually around six months, rub a damp, clean washcloth over his or her gums (front and back) at least once per day.  This allows your child to get used to an oral cleaning routine while removing lingering plaque and food. You should brush your baby’s teeth until he or she is old enough to hold a toothbrush. Meanwhile, keep on the lookout for any signs of baby tooth decay.

If you have questions about your child’s oral care, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. The Extraction of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth can cause quite the stir. Often, they grow in painful and do not fit right. Other times, they fit okay, but it is still a good idea to take them out. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, we are able to examine wisdom teeth, create a plan for them, and extract them as needed.

Since most of everyone has their wisdom teeth pulled out, you may be wondering why we even have wisdom teeth in the first place. Well, there is a theory that we needed them about 20,000 years ago. Back then, humans had a much rougher diet of things like of uncooked meat, nuts, and roots. It is thought that the extra teeth helped chew through these foods better. However, since, then, the human facial structure and jaw has shrunken. We also have a lot more food options and do not eat such tough chews all the time. This has rendered our wisdom teeth ill-fitting and unnecessary.

In order to remove wisdom teeth, first, your doctor will make an incision in the gums to access the bone tissue holding in the tooth. The bone is removed and the tooth is rocked back and forth until it is pulled free. Occasionally, the tooth will need to be broken up into several pieces before it is removed. The area is then cleaned and stitched up to heal. You will need to follow instructions to allow a healthy and speedy recovery.

Wisdom teeth can cause a lot of pain. It is important to have them monitored if you think they are growing in. To schedule an appointment at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call our office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Fight Off Bad Breath

Bad breath can be embarrassing and well, gross. Fortunately, here at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, we are able to give our patients tips on keeping bad breath away. Keep reading to learn how it happens and what you can do about it!

Fresh breath comes down to a few different things; cleanliness, hydration, and food. First, we will talk about cleanliness. Bacteria are often the culprit of bad breath. Good oral hygiene including brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist will keep your mouth in good shape.

Hydration is important because bacteria thrive in dry mouth conditions. Get in your recommended amount of water every day. Make it a priority. Not only will you have fresher breath, your mouth and whole body will be healthier!

Certain foods can also contribute to bad breath. Dairy especially contains certain types of bacteria that contribute to bad smells. Then there are stinky foods like onions and garlic. Chew mint leaves or lemon rinds after consuming “stinky food” as this will both freshen and hydrate your mouth. In addition, reach for bacteria-fighting foods. Examples of these are yogurt, which has live and active good bacteria cultures that fight bad bacteria and green tea which hydrates and eliminates bad odors.

Bad breath can ruin a moment but not when you have these tips to keep it away! To schedule your next appointment with Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call our office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Tooth Care for Babies

When teeth first come in, your child may start to fuss. This is because he or she has sore or tender gums and the eruption of those little tooth buds are causing them pain. Parents often, when should I start cleaning my child’s teeth? The answer is that daily dental cleaning should start as soon as your infant’s first tooth appears. To help prevent the buildup of plaque bacteria that can lead to decay, our doctors at Southern Cross Dental highly recommend regularly cleaning your newborn’s gums with a damp washcloth following feedings.

While most babies don’t start getting teeth until they are six months old, infant dental care is important from the very beginning. In addition to cleaning your baby’s gums with a damp cloth, you can also gently rub their gums with a clean finger, a small, cool spoon, or a wet gauze pad. You can also give the baby a clean teething ring to chew on. It’s important to care for your baby’s teeth from the start because his or her gums act as placement holders for permanent teeth.

If you have a question about your child’s tooth care, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. Teeth Whitening Perks

How many of us get a confidence boost when a stranger gives us a compliment? Have you ever paid attention to how much of a positive effect this has on your self-esteem? The same positive feeling can result from teeth whitening. Teeth-whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter than your natural color if you would like. Here Southern Cross Dental, our doctors can help you do just that.

With all of the lifestyle habits and environmental factors that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance sometimes leave them a little dull. Fortunately, through our whitening system, your pearly whites can revive their shine. In addition, teeth-whitening can also take years off of your appearance. This is because as we age, over time, our teeth darken and can become yellow, brown, or even develop a green or gray tint (which may be due to heredity and/or eating habits). Your smile speaks volumes about who you are and leaves an everlasting impression, so it’s only natural that you want it to be as radiant as possible.

If you would like to discuss your teeth whitening options, please give us a call.  To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. Post-Op Tooth Extraction Care

There are many reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. Tooth decay, gum disease, or even for orthodontic purposes name a few. After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches and you will need to follow strict instructions that our doctors at Southern Cross Dental will give you. After the surgery, you will need to rest and you should expect the extraction site to bleed a little following extraction. In addition, here are a few things to remember during post-op care.

If bleeding continues for longer than 24 hours you should call our office immediately. Once you return home after the surgery you should rest, but do not lie flat. This could prolong the bleeding. One of our doctors will prescribe you pain medication, as well as cleaning solution for the extraction site, so if you become sore take as directed. It’s important to limit yourself to soft foods such as gelatin, pudding, yogurt, mashed potatoes, etc. so that the stitches are not punctured. When drinking, make sure you do not use a straw, because the sucking motion can loosen your sutures and slow the clotting process.

If you are experiencing tooth discomfort or have questions about post-op aftercare, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. Digital X-rays

If eligible, you may receive two types of dental X-rays upon arriving for a treatment at Southern Cross Dental: intraoral (the X-ray film inside the mouth) and extraoral (the X-ray film outside the mouth. A digital X-ray allows our doctors to take an image of the tooth or teeth and put it into an imaging program. As a benefit to the patient, the digital X-ray also provides nearly 80% less radiation than a standard X-ray.

Here at Southern Cross Dental, we will review your history, examine your mouth and then decide whether or not you need X-rays. Dental X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool when helping our doctors detects damage and disease not visible during a routine dental exam. How often X-rays should be taken depends on your present oral health, your age, your risk for disease, and any signs and symptoms of oral disease. For example, children may require X-rays more often than adults because their teeth and jaws are still developing and their teeth are more likely to be affected by tooth decay than those of adults.

Patient Anxiety

It is one thing for anxiety to affect your daily relationships, but when it starts to impact your overall health then it becomes a problem. Dental anxiety, or dental phobia, is much more serious than just getting sweating palms and sleepless nights before an appointment – it’s a paralyzing fear of dentists or dental treatment. Luckily at Southern Cross Dental our doctors have the tools, techniques, and gentle touch to help make regular dental visits as comfortable as possible for you.

The key to coping with dental anxiety is to discuss your fears with your doctor. Once he or she becomes aware of what your fears are, he or she will better be able to work with you to determine the best ways to make you less anxious and more relaxed. In addition, ask your doctor what’s happening at every stage of the procedure. This way you can mentally prepare for what’s to come.

Electric vs Manual Toothbrush

Here at Southern Cross Dental, our doctors aren’t picky about what type of toothbrush you use because the important thing is that you are brushing your teeth correctly. However, we thought we would tell explain how brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush compares to manual brushing.

It’s possible to brush your teeth effectively with a manual toothbrush. However, an electric toothbrush can be a great alternative to a manual one, especially if you have arthritis or other conditions that make it difficult to brush well. Although almost any toothbrush can do an effective job, research suggests there is one electronic toothbrush bristle configuration that seems to be better at removing plaque and preventing gum disease.

If you choose an electric toothbrush, make sure the toothbrush is comfortable to hold and easy to use. It’s important to remember that the purpose of a toothbrush is to remove plaque and to stimulate the gums to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Whether you choose an electric toothbrush or a manual one, remember that what’s most important is daily brushing and flossing.

What is a General Dentist?

General dentists are the primary dental care providers for patients of all ages. They can treat you and your entire family and care for your overall health. Dentistry is defined as the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment (nonsurgical or related procedures) of diseases, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and/or the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body. When looking for exceptional and quality general dentistry services, look no further than Southern Cross Dental.

Instead of specializing in just one area of dentistry, general dentists provide plenty of different services for you and your family, such as: cosmetic procedures, crowns and bridges, dental implants, dentures, gum disease treatment, home care instruction, root canal therapy, teeth cleanings and many more.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a chemical compound with the formula N20. At room temperature, it is a colorless, non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. At Southern Cross Dental, our doctors only administer this pain-relieving formula to eligible patients.

Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used form of sedation in dentistry. It is administered by having the patient inhale the gas, which is carefully monitored by our doctors. You will fall into a euphoric state and feel completely relaxed. All feelings of fear and anxiety fade away, leaving you to sit back peacefully while your dental procedure is performed. In most cases, all dental work can be completed in one visit while you are sedated. Once the procedure is over, the nitrous oxide will wear off fairly quickly and you will probably be able to drive yourself home and return to your daily activities.

Implant Failure

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. In fact, they are one of the most reliable long-term methods of tooth replacement. However, as with any other surgical procedure, there are a variety of internal and external factors that cause complications or even total failure of treatment. When this happens, our doctors at Southern Cross Dental are here to help.

Osseointegration describes the formation of a direct functional and structural connection between a person’s bone and an artificial implant. There are two primary reasons for “later” implant failure after the osseointegration process has been successful. These include over-stressing implants with too much biting force, or inflammatory disease of the gum tissues and/or bone around the implant. Prevention plays a tremendous role in avoiding implant failure. Once the implants are placed, it’s crucial to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. Make sure you schedule regular dental cleanings to help keep the tissues around your implants healthy.

Keeping White Teeth During Braces

Getting your braces off is exciting; you cannot wait to see what your smile is going to look like. Plus, you can finally eat what you want and brush and floss normally! What you do not want to see is uneven staining due to the brackets. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, we want to remind our patients who wear braces of what they can do to avoid staining.

Keeping your smile nice and bright can seem a little more complicated when you have braces on, but that is because there is just a little more work involved. While this is true, it should not deter you from keeping excellent oral health. Excellent oral care will yield beautiful and healthy teeth when the braces come off.

To make sure you are removing debris and plaque that could lead to staining, make sure you keep up with your dental hygiene routine. Brush two to three times per day and floss once per day. It helps if you brush after each meal. You will also want to stay away from dark foods and drinks as these could lead to staining, as well. Blueberries, soy sauce, tea, and cola are all examples are dark foods and drinks that can stain teeth if consumed frequently.

Something that may help you take better care of your teeth while wearing braces is an interdental cleaner. They help you brush around your brackets underneath your wire. Floss threaders will also be a big help.

Follow these tips for a beautiful smile during and after braces! To schedule your routine examination at Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO, call our office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Natural-Looking and Strong Dental Bridges

Replacing teeth does more than make your smile whole again. It helps with speech, eating, and it even keeps the structure of your jaw intact. One of the options we offer here at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO is dental bridges. These are popular options that are able to look completely natural.

Dental bridges affix a replacement tooth to dental crowns which will go over the teeth adjacent to where the open space is. The replacement tooth is between two crowns, “bridging” the gap, which is why it is referred to as a bridge. Bridges can be made to look just like your natural teeth, so it will blend right in with your smile.

A custom dental bridge is created by reshaping the teeth adjacent to the opening so that crowns will fit on them. An impression of the area is taken so that a dental laboratory can create the perfect and natural looking bridge that will be your replacement. During the creation process, you will wear a temporary bridge for protection and use. When the permanent bridge is ready, it is cemented into place. Bridges can last for a very long time with good dental care.

If you are in need of a replacement, be sure to schedule an appointment with us to explore all your options. To schedule an appointment at Southern Cross Dental in our Colorado Springs, CO office, call (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Cosmetic Dentistry Defined

From subtle changes to major repairs, at Southern Cross Dental we offer a variety of procedures to improve your smile. While traditional dentistry addresses the health of your teeth and gums, cosmetic dentistry focuses on the appearance of your teeth, mouth, and smile as a whole. Today, cosmetic dentistry is more popular than ever, from whitening and shaping to closing spaces and replacing teeth. But before you decide to undergo any cosmetic procedure, it’s important to know what you can expect during the process.

At Southern Cross Dental, some of our cosmetic procedures include teeth whitening as well as applying veneers. Teeth whitening is a common and popular chemical process that brightens teeth that have become discolored or stained. Depending on the patient’s preference, this can be performed by one of our doctor’s in-office or in the comfort of your own home. Veneers, on the other hand, are used on teeth with uneven surfaces or are chipped, discolored, oddly shaped, unevenly spaced or crooked. They are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic placed over the front teeth to change the color or shape of your teeth.

Mouth Guards Prevent Dental Injuries in Athletes

Mouth guard use has been shown to reduce the risk of sport-related dental injuries. Imagine playing a sport that you love, when suddenly a tooth gets knocked out. Smiling, talking and eating would be difficult and it would probably take you some time to recover. When it comes to protecting your mouth, a mouth guard is an essential piece of athletic gear that should be part of your standard from an early age. Healthy Foods for Teeth and Gums

Did you know that there are certain foods that are good for your oral health? Just like you have probably heard that carrots are good for eyesight, there are foods that are good for teeth and gums. At Southern Cross Family Dentistry in Colorado Springs, CO, we want our patients to know how to take good care of their teeth at home. Keep reading to learn about the different foods that can benefit your oral health!

Foods rich in calcium like milk, cheese, and yogurt are great for strong teeth. In addition, yogurt contains good bacteria that fight off odor-causing bacteria while milk lowers acid levels in your mouth.

Crunchy, fibrous foods like carrots, apples, and cucumbers actually help clean your teeth as you eat them. They remove plaque as you bite into them and chew them. If you are ever at a party and are in a pinch for a toothbrush, go for the cucumber tray!

For good gum health, snack on citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits. They strengthen the blood vessels and connective tissues that hold your teeth to your jaw. They can also help reduce any inflammation.

Custom and Natural-Looking Dental Crowns

Decayed or damaged teeth need restoration and protection; otherwise, they can lead to infection and complete loss of the tooth. Here at Southern Cross Family Dentistry in Colorado Springs, CO, we are able to create completely custom dental crowns to keep our patients’ natural teeth for as long as possible.

Our custom dental crowns are caps that go over the whole tooth. They are colored to match the shade of the rest of your teeth; so when you smile, no one will be able to tell the difference. Crowns strengthen weak teeth and restore health to the tooth. With a dental crown, we can avoid pulling the tooth out completely.

To have a dental crown made, we will first remove any decay from the tooth and reshape it for the crown. Impressions are taken of the area and sent to a dental laboratory so the custom crown can be created. The creation process will take a few weeks; so during this time, you will wear a temporary crown. When the permanent crown is ready, we cement it into place. Crowns need to be taken care of just like regular teeth, but with good care, they can last for over fifteen years.

If you are interested in a natural-looking custom crown, schedule an appointment with Southern Cross Family Dentistry. To schedule in our Colorado Springs, CO office, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer is a malignant growth that affects any part of the oral cavity, including the lips, upper or lower jaw, tongue, gums, cheeks, and throat. Anyone can get oral cancer, but the risk is higher if you are male, over age 40, use tobacco or alcohol or have a history of head or neck cancer. Understanding the causative factors of cancer will contribute to the prevention of the disease. Your health is important to us and you should schedule regular dental checkups with our doctors at Southern Cross Dental to detect oral cancer early when it is the easiest to treat.

The most common symptom of oral cancer is a sore in the mouth that bleeds easily and does not heal. Another common sign of oral cancer is developing pain in the mouth that does not go away. Our doctors at Southern Cross Dental can examine the mouth and throat as part of a routine checkup if you are concerned about developing oral cancer. During regular checkups, abnormal tissue changes and oral cancer can be detected at its earliest stage when there is a greater chance for a cure.

Tooth Care for Seniors

As we age, our bodies grow weaker, and the same applies to our teeth. Fortunately, our doctors at Southern Cross Dental can assist you in keeping them healthy. Your teeth are some of the strongest units in your body. However, they can still be worn down. No matter what your age, your permanent teeth can last a lifetime with proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups.

Even if you brush and floss regularly, you may face certain issues in your senior years when it comes to your oral health. This is because seniors are more prone to oral health conditions such as darkened teeth, gum disease, sensitive and tooth decay. In reference to our bodies growing weaker, the same applies to our hands. Certain medical conditions, such as arthritis in the hands and fingers, may make brushing or flossing teeth difficult or impossible to perform.

Bruxism Basics

Do you ever wake up from a night’s sleep with sore teeth and jaws? You could be grinding your teeth. The medical term for occasional teeth grinding is called bruxism and although this condition does not usually cause harm, when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis the teeth can be damaged and other oral health complications can arise. At Southern Cross Dental, we can develop an individualized treatment plan to help alleviate this condition.

Stress, anxiety, smoking, heavy alcohol, caffeine, depression and sleep disorders are all possible causes of teeth grinding. Treatment for teeth grinding depends on the cause. In some cases, chronic teeth grinding can result in fracturing, loosening or loss of teeth. Patients may benefit from a mouth guard to stabilize the jaw and prevent tooth damage that is caused by grinding.

The Root Canal Procedure

If you have a tooth that is causing you pain due to severe decay or injury, the good news is that our doctors at Southern Cross Dental can save it. The bad news is that a root canal may need to be performed if the nerve of the tooth becomes infected or the pulp becomes damaged. Root Canals have a bad reputation for being scary and painful. However, the discomfort experienced in the period leading up to seeking dental care is more painful than the procedure itself.

If you’ve been told you need a root canal, we’d like to make you a little calmer by explaining how the procedure works. First, the area around the tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic to start the procedure. Then Dr. Pallavi Chellur will drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. She will then be able to remove infected tissue and clean the canal. After the infection has been removed, the empty space is filled with a sealant called gutta percha. The tooth that has undergone a root canal is then fitted with a crown. This will improve the appearance of the tooth, and will also make it much more likely that the root canal is successful.

Show Off Your Smile

With selfies and instant photo sharing taking over the internet, our doctors at Southern Cross Dental want you to have a camera-ready smile at all times. With a variety of cosmetic services to choose from, we can enhance your smile anyway you’d like. However, if there is any reason you can’t go the cosmetic route at this moment, we will provide you with these tips that will give you a photogenic smile no matter what.

  • Be natural – when it’s picture time, smile gently. That way, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth opens slightly, and your lower lip matches the curve of your upper teeth.

  • Check your teeth and gums – getting your smile camera-ready sometimes calls for a little behind the scenes prep work. If your pearly whites have yellowed with age, try an over-the-counter whitening product or pay us a visit! Also, don’t forget about taking care of your gums. They play a critical role in your nice smile. So keep them in good shape by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash every day.

  • Practice – your perfect smile may not happen overnight, but if you have a big photo event like a wedding or a graduation coming up, it doesn’t hurt to try out your grin in front of the mirror!

Breaking Bad Oral Habits

If you avoid eating cold foods or drinking hot beverages because your teeth are a little tender, it may be time to do some oral care habit reflecting. If you have sensitive teeth, our doctors at Southern Cross Dental may recommend dental sealants or fluoride treatments to decrease sensitivity. Sometimes the solution is simply breaking bad habits. If you catch yourself performing any of the following habits, do your best to break them.

  • You’re brushing too hard – over time, if you brush with too much force, you can wear down the protective layers of your teeth and expose the microscopic hollow tubes or canals that lead to your dental nerves. When these tubules are exposed, tooth sensitivity is a result.

  • You’re eating too many acidic foods – If the pathways to your nerves are exposed, acidic foods will leave you in pain.

  • You have tooth decay – If you have tooth decay, it’s easy for bacteria to accumulate in these tiny crevices, which causes acid build-up and enamel breakdown.

  • You’re a tooth grinder – Grinding your teeth can wear down your enamel. This exposes the dentin and causes sensitive teeth.

Do You Brush For a Full Two Minutes?

Many patients do not realize the short amount of time they spend brushing their teeth. The recommended time is about two minutes, which may sound long, but if you are brushing all that you need to, it goes by pretty quickly. Dr. Navid Rahimpour, DDS and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour, DDS wants to remind their patients at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO of why the full two minutes is important. In addition, take some tips for making sure you do spend enough time.

Dental plaque is a film of bacteria that form on your teeth from food, drinks, and even our saliva. It is important to remove the bacteria from all areas of your mouth including the fronts of your teeth, the insides, the chewing surfaces, the backs of the back molars, your tongue, the roof of your mouth, and the insides of your cheeks. All of this will take about two minutes.

Splitting the mouth into four sections is also a good way to break up the minutes and get an even brushing. Spend thirty seconds on the upper-right section, thirty seconds on the upper-left section, and so on for the two lower sections.

There are also electric and manual toothbrushes that have timers on them. Or keep track by playing some music while you brush. Most music players have counters on them, so you’ll know when you hit the two-minute mark.

Good at-home dental care is essential for your oral and overall health. To schedule a cleaning with Dr. Navid Rahimpour, DDS or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental, call our Colorado Springs, CO office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Pregnancy and Oral Health

During pregnancy, nearly everything in your body goes through changes and that includes your teeth and gums. Dr. Navid Rahimpour, DDS and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO want our pregnant patients to know how to keep good oral health during these changes.

Pregnancy causes a big increase in hormones that can affect your teeth and gums. The extra hormones present can cause your gums to be more sensitive to plaque. Your gums can even become puffy, red, and irritated. This condition is known as “pregnancy gingivitis”. Pregnancy gingivitis should clear up after the baby is born, but left alone, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. This may be able to be avoided with more frequent home oral care and professional dental cleanings. It’s important to schedule an appointment with us if you think you are developing gum disease.

Cavities are also at an increased risk due to change in behavior during pregnancy. Being pregnant means you will be eating more carbohydrates than normal, which means the teeth are being introduced to a lot more sugar. Also, the increased frequency of acid in the mouth from morning sickness can wear away enamel, making teeth prone to cavities.

If you are pregnant or plan to be pregnant, ask us about what can be done to be proactive about your oral health. It is important for both you and your baby. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Navid Rahimpour, DDS or Dr. Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental, call our Colorado Springs, CO office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Consequences of Missing Teeth

Although tooth loss is typically associated with the elderly, missing teeth can occur in adults for a variety of reasons. Whether you’ve lost a tooth to decay, or injury, tooth loss can rob you of much more than the ability to chew and properly digest food. It can have serious social, psychological and emotional consequences as well. At Southern Cross Dental, we don’t want you to experience the consequences of a toothless grin. This is why we offer a wide variety of restorative and cosmetic options to give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

The most obvious effect of missing teeth is aesthetic. When a tooth is lost, the facial muscles begin to sag, making you appear older than you are. Additionally, missing teeth will make it more difficult to chew and may even affect the way you speak. The more teeth a person is missing, the more challenging the task to replace them can become. It can also be costly. It is important to have regular dental visits with us to prolong the life of your teeth.

If you have missing teeth, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

Details on Dental Emergencies

Any trauma to the mouth that may cause bleeding and lacerations to the gums, dislodge, or fracture teeth, and may require medical attention is defined as a dental emergency. If left untreated, trauma to the teeth and gums can lead to serious complications. At Southern Cross Dental, if an accident occurs, it is important to visit us a call right away. In the meantime, here are some tips for handling common dental emergencies before you visit our office.

  • For a knocked-out permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it between your cheek and gums, or use a tooth preservation product that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance.

  • For a cracked tooth, immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area.

  • If you bite your tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress.

  • For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between teeth.

If you experience a dental emergency, please give us a call immediately. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. Oral Health for Seniors

Advancing age puts many seniors at risk for a number of oral health problems, such as darkened teeth, dry mouth, and a diminished sense of taste, root decay, gum disease, tooth loss, and many more. This is why it’s important to visit our staff at Southern Cross Dental for professional cleanings and dental exams at least twice a year. The goal is to keep your natural teeth for a lifetime, but even if you brush and floss regularly, you may face certain issues in your senior years when it comes to your oral health.

Wearing dentures, taking medications and general health conditions are some of the issues many seniors face. Teeth can also become more sensitive with age because our gums naturally recede over time, exposing areas of the tooth that are not protected by enamel. Unfortunately, as we age, arthritis can play another role in our oral health. For people who have this condition and have trouble using a manual toothbrush, an electric toothbrush may be easier to use and increase effectiveness. After all, the best way to have a healthy mouth is to prevent oral diseases in the first place.

What Happens When You Skip Brushing and Flossing?

We all know our dentist tells us to brush twice per day and floss once per day but do we all really do it? Maybe if you knew why it is needed, you would. Dr. Navid Rahimpour DDS and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO want their patients to know the consequences of poor oral care.

There is a reason why brushing twice per day and flossing once per day is important. Failing to keep good care of your teeth can result in decay, gum disease, and the loss of teeth. Not to mention some pretty bad breath and an unpleasant smile.

Plaque is what forms on our teeth throughout the day. It looks like a whitish material and especially likes to collect near our gum lines. Plaque is actually a film of bacteria and it is formed from food, drinks, and saliva. Plaque in itself can cause enamel to weaken and form cavities. However, if plaque is not removed, it can soon turn into tartar. Tartar is a calcified form of plaque that can really only be removed by a dentist. If this plaque and tartar sit on your teeth for long enough, the gums become irritated and can begin to recede. Infected gums are painful, they bleed easily, and they lead to worse problems like lost teeth and spread of infection. Gum disease can even increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Plaque forms just hours after brushing and flossing, which is why it is important to brush several times per day. Flossing should be done once per day. The bacteria that get caught between teeth can begin to do damage after a day, which is why flossing is important to get to once per day.

Along with a great oral care routine at home, visits to your dentist for a professional cleaning are important, too. To schedule your cleaning with Dr. Navid Rahimpour, DDS and Dr. Faranak Rahimpour, DDS in Colorado Springs, CO, call our office at (719) 471-1717. Appointments may also be made through our Southern Cross Dental website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

TMJ/TMD Diet

TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder is a pain or malfunction at the point where the jawbone is attached. TMJ can have many symptoms, from clicking, to locking of the jaw, to headache, earache, or even a feeling of tiredness in the face. Because TMJ affects the chewing muscles, the condition may worsen when eating certain foods. Here at Southern Cross Dental, our doctors can not only treat TMJ disorder, but they can suggest diet changes that can alleviate symptoms.

We know that giving up certain foods is easier said than done, but you may need to try eliminating certain culprits from your diet if this decreases your problems with TMJ. To lessen pain and other symptoms associated with this condition, avoid eating hard foods, crunchy foods, and thick or large foods that involve opening your mouth wide when you chew them. You may also want to eliminate fatty foods that require a lot of chewing. Some good foods to eat include cooked vegetables and fruits, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs. By incorporating soft foods into your diet you are giving your jaw and temporomandibular joints the opportunity to rest and heal.

If you experience jaw soreness or hear a clicking sound when you chew, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

How to Take Care of a Dental Crown

Dental crowns are great because they can allow a tooth to remain in place even after some damage. Crowns repair the function of your tooth and restore your oral health. After having a crown installed, there will be some things to keep in mind. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, we can provide our patients with custom dental crowns. Read on to learn about taking care of a crown.

The process of installing a dental crown will include wearing a temporary crown for a short time. This is so that a dental laboratory can create the permanent custom crown. While you are wearing this temporary crown, you will want to avoid foods that are too hard or too sticky. These foods could cause the crown to pop off. Also, be careful when brushing and flossing.

After the permanent crown is installed, there may be some irritation or soreness in the gums surrounding the crown. This will subside as the gum tissue gets used to the new structure of the tooth. To deal with the irritation, it helps to swish your mouth with warm salt water. Ibuprofen can also be taken. Soon, your gums will adjust and your new crown will feel just like the rest of your teeth.

If you are interested in more about dental crowns, contact Southern Cross Dental of Colorado Springs, CO. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS, call our office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Cracked Tooth Syndrome

Cracked tooth syndrome does not mean that you are clumsy enough to crack your teeth all the time. Believe it or not, cracked tooth syndrome occurs when a tooth has a crack that is too small to show up on X-rays or is under the gum and challenging to identify. The sensitivity may be mild to intense, which is why to determine if you have a cracked tooth, our doctors at Noah Dental Group, will examine your mouth and teeth, focusing on the tooth in question.

Cracked tooth syndrome is most common in the lower back teeth (molars.) That’s because the teeth absorb most of the forces of chewing. Most people experience cracked tooth syndrome as pain or discomfort when biting into food, or when teeth are exposed to hot or cold temperatures. How long symptoms last depends on how quickly a cracked tooth can be diagnosed. However, even after a crack is found, treatment may be difficult.

If you are experiencing pain in your mouth, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. Types of Teeth and Their Functions

Many factors play a role in how many teeth we have, but there are typically 32 permanent teeth in the mouth including the four wisdom teeth. The first permanent teeth to erupt (usually at about six years) are the four first permanent molars behind the last primary teeth. At Southern Cross Dental it is our job to take care of all your teeth, but if you’ve ever wondered why your teeth are different shapes and sizes, we are here to tell you why.

The types of teeth we have and their functions are:

  • Incisors – located at the front of the mouth, these teeth have a sharp biting surface and are used for cutting or shearing food into small chewable pieces.

  • Canines – located at the ‘corners’ of the dental arches, these teeth have a sharp pointed biting surface. Their function is to grip and tear food.

  • Premolars – Unlike incisors and canines, these teeth have a flat biting surface. Their function is to tear and crush food.

  • Molars – The molars are the largest teeth in the mouth and they too have a large flat biting surface. The function of these is perhaps the strongest of all as they chew, crush, and grind food.

If you have further questions regarding your pearly whites, don’t hesitate to give us a call. Reasons for Tooth Extractions

At Southern Cross Dental, our doctors cannot stress enough the importance of taking care of your oral health. If you don’t brush and floss your teeth on a regular basis, you risk developing gum disease that can eventually lead to tooth decay. When teeth have significant decay, sometimes they cannot be treated by a root canal and will need to be extracted. In some cases, a broken tooth may also need to be extracted. Other reasons for tooth extractions include:

Some people have extra teeth that block other teeth from coming in.

Sometimes baby teeth don’t fall out in time to allow permanent teeth to come in.

People getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for teeth that are being moved into place.

Some teeth may need to be extracted if they have the potential of becoming infected.

If any of this issues sound all too familiar or if you have a tooth that is causing you pain, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

The Stages of Gum Disease

Many of us have heard of gum disease, but do we really know how it develops? Gingivitis is considered the first stage of gum disease but if left untreated, it can advance into periodontitis. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS want to be sure our patients know how gum disease develops so we can work together to avoid it.

When gums become red, puffy, irritated, and start bleeding, this is often considered gingivitis. As stated before, gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. It is caused from plaque and tartar that remain on the teeth. Plaque and tartar are formed from bacteria and when they are not removed, they can irritate the gums. If gingivitis is not treated, it can advance into a worse form of gum disease, called periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a serious condition that can destroy soft tissue and bone tissue. It can also spread infection which leads to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Characteristics of periodontitis include swollen gums, bright red or purple gums, tenderness, receded gums, loose teeth, lost teeth, a bad taste in your mouth, and bad breath. Pus may also form in the spaces between your teeth and gums. Periodontitis is much harder to get rid of. Recovery can include full-mouth scaling and planing procedures and gum grafts.

While gum disease can turn very serious, it is also completely preventable. Taking great oral care at home and seeing your dentist for routine cleanings and examinations will make sure you stay on top of your oral health. To schedule your next appointment with Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Colorado Springs, CO, call our office at (719) 471-1717. Healthy Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is almost here which usually brings copious amounts of candy! This Valentine’s Day, take some tips for choosing healthier treats and doing an extra-great job cleaning your teeth! Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental here in Colorado Springs, CO want their patients to enjoy the holiday but still think of their dental health!

We know that Valentine’s Day is filled with lots of sweets, so it is important to really pay attention to your dental habits. Sugar can lead to tooth decay if not brushed away properly. Make sure to brush two to three times per day, but maybe throw in an extra brushing if you’re eating a lot of sweets! Flossing should be done once per day, especially during this time. Sticky candies can become stuck in between teeth and let the sugar just sit there until it is flossed away! Sticky candies are also known for pulling out dental restorations and pulling off dental brackets, so be careful!

Some healthier options for treats include chocolate dipped strawberries and berries with whipped cream! They are both delicious and not nearly as bad for your teeth as candy. In fact, strawberries even have the capability to help whiten your teeth!

Enjoy your Valentine’s Day and keep up your brushing! To schedule an appointment with Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental in our Colorado Springs, CO office, call us at (719) 471-1717. Appointments may also be set up through our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

How Smoking Affects Oral Health

When a person smokes, the smoke first enters the body through the mouth, so it should be no surprise that smoking is terrible for oral health. Drs. Navid Rahimpour and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS here at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO want the best oral health for all of their patients. If you smoke and have been thinking about quitting, now is the perfect time to do so!

When the smoke enters your mouth, it changes the gum tissue and the blood vessels within them. The top layer of gum tissue thickens; a condition called keratosis. The blood vessels become constricted, which means not enough blood supplies the area. The salivary glands also become damaged, which creates dry mouth. These types of conditions affect healing, immune strength, and promote an environment for bacteria growth.

Increased bacteria can lead to gum disease, which if left untreated, can lead to loss of teeth. The risk of infections is also greater since the immune strength is lowered. Smoking also stains breath and darkens teeth.

Probably the worst effect of any is that smoking causes cancer. Cancerous lesions can form on the gums, the lips, the throat, the tongue, and other areas of the mouth.

Our patients’ oral health is our top concern here at Southern Cross Dental. To schedule an examination and cleaning with Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS, call our Colorado Springs, CO office at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

The Important Difference Between Plaque and Tartar

Anyone who has been to the dentist or read a toothpaste label has heard of plaque and tartar. While they are common dental terms, many do not know the difference between the two. Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS of Southern Cross Dental are committed to helping their patients lead a life of oral health. In our Colorado Springs, CO office, we want to help our patients understand the difference between plaque and tartar and why it is important.

Plaque is a thin, sticky substance that coats teeth. It is bacteria created from food, drinks, and our own saliva. It is often white in color or a pale yellow. Brushing and flossing remove plaque, but plaque forms just hours after doing so. That is why it is so important to brush your teeth two to three times per day and floss once per day!

Tartar is what forms when plaque is not brushed away. It commonly forms in hard-to-reach areas but can form anywhere plaque forms if oral hygiene is poor. When the plaque is not removed, it begins to form tiny crystals which eventually harden into calculus. Tartar is not removable by brushing and flossing and it must be removed by your dentist. Tartar left on your teeth can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Tartar may also begin to grow into the spaces between gums and teeth when irritated gums begin to recess.

To avoid plaque and tartar from forming and harming your oral health, develop a great at-home oral care routine! Also, make your cleaning and examination appointments with Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS! To schedule with Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

When Your Child Fears the Dentist

There are some kids who love going to the dentist, but for the kids who fear dental appointments, it can be tough to calm them down. At our Colorado Springs, CO dental practice, Southern Cross Dental, Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS want all of our patients to enjoy their dental appointment and feel relaxed. Take some tips for calming down your child when he or she fears dental appointments.

The key to relaxing your child is familiarity. This is most easily done by taking your child to the dentist routinely from an early age. However, if your child is going to the dentist for the first time, you can still prepare them and make them more familiar. Take them with you to your dental appointments first so they can see the office, meet the staff, and see that you have no problem seeing the dentist. You can also help them understand what the dentist will do by setting up a pretend dental appointment at home. Have your child lay back on a couch or reclining chair and open wide. Look inside their mouth and maybe use a toothbrush to scrub each tooth. Pretend to look at each tooth and comment about how healthy they are. This helps them become familiar with the actual process so when it really happens, they will know more of what to expect.

Kids will also feel better when they know that their teeth will be clean and healthy after seeing the dentist. A good checkup will give them something to be proud of. To schedule your child’s dental appointment with Drs. Navid and Faranak Rahimpour, DDS at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call us at (719) 471-1717 or visit our website, www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com

Cavity Basics

Many people think only children get cavities, but changes in your mouth as you age can make them an adult problem too. Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. If cavities aren’t treated they get larger and affect deeper layers of your teeth. Not all cavities cause pain, so it is important to schedule regular dental checkups at Southern Cross Dental to maintain a cavity-free smile.

Cavities, also called tooth decay, or caries, are caused by a combination of factors including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks, and failure to practice proper oral hygiene. The signs and symptoms of cavities vary, depending on their extent and location. However, your indicators may be non-existent at first. As the decay gets larger, it may cause a toothache, tooth sensitivity, mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold, visible holes or pits in your teeth, and/or pain when you chew. Regardless of where they occur, the best way to diagnose and treat them before they become serious is to brush and floss on a daily basis and schedule dental checkups every six months.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity and suspect you may have a cavity, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information.
