Post-Extraction Swelling

We’re trusted tooth extractors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs. As an office that serves people of all ages, we’ve assisted lots of teenagers with wisdom tooth removal, ensuring they will have hygienic, healthily aligned bites. Although we strive to make our patients as comfortable as possible, some swelling after this procedure is normal. We want our patients to understand why so they’ll be more at ease and better able to recognize if something does go wrong.

When a tooth is extracted, the jaw bone will be briefly exposed before the blood clots and seals the socket. The immune system recognizes this as a wound and triggers inflammation. This process prevents harmful bacteria that may have entered the socket from spreading to the rest of the body and concentrates white blood cells where they’re needed. Generally, inflammation is proportionate to the complexity of an extraction, so extractions done with incisions can be expected to cause more swelling.

In the initial aftermath of an extraction, we advise patients to limit swelling by applying cold packs. They should follow the fifteen-on-fifteen-off rule: never put an ice pack on the skin for more than fifteen minutes and always allow fifteen minutes to pass between applications. Swelling should peak within forty-eight, after which the patient can apply the same procedure with hot packs. If swelling is still increasing after three days, the patient should call us for assistance. Red discoloration is a normal part of inflammation, but if the tissue near the surgical site turns black or white, the patient should seek emergency care. In most cases, swelling can be controlled through conventional means and over-the-counter pain medication is sufficient.

Bite Checks

As a family practice, we at Southern Cross Dental carefully monitor the dental development of our pediatric patients. While we use the latest technology to predict where children’s permanent teeth will come in, biannual check-ups are chances for us to ensure the teeth they already have are comfortable and healthy. If we see a problem, we can refer them for orthodontic work, although we’ll remain an important part of each child’s health team.

We’ll ask children to close their teeth together and whether they’ve experienced any pain while chewing or when they wake up. This will help us to establish whether they have an issue with misaligned teeth (also known as malocclusions) or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD). If they have TMJD, they may be clenching their jaws subconsciously or grinding their teeth in their sleep. This would result in distinctive wear patterns in their enamel and could further exacerbate malocclusions.

Although the wisdom teeth usually do not erupt until late adolescence, orthodontic work is usually done during late childhood and early adolescence. This is because children’s jawbones have not solidified as much and more extensive orthodontic work can be done on them without the need for surgery. It’s normal for children to get their first orthodontic assessment when they’re about seven, but work would only start at that age in extreme circumstances. An orthodontist may still prefer that we do any necessary extractions, and we will continue to provide cleanings and sealants while orthodontic work is ongoing.

What is TMD?

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones in your skull, in front of each ear.  A general term for any problem or issue with this joint is temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.  At Southern Cross Dental, we help patients prevent and recover from negative effects of TMD.

Patients that grind or clench their teeth often end up with a sore jaw.  Other patients experience injuries with facial trauma that cause jaw pain, or result in the patient feeling their jaw gets stuck or ‘locks’ in either an open or closed position.  A custom night guard keeps the jaw in a neutral position during sleep, and this helps many patients find relief from TMD symptoms.  For any pain, your dentist may recommend an over-the-counter painkiller or warm and cold compresses.  To prevent further discomfort, you may be assigned stretches for your jaw.

Whatever your symptoms, you don’t have to suffer with discomfort in your jaw.  To learn more about TMD and the services provided at the practice, visit www.scdsmile.com for more information. Cirrhosis and Gum Disease

Dentistry is a crucial part of overall health. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, we enjoy keeping up with the latest developments in our field. Recent research has indicated that gum disease is closely tied to diseases elsewhere in the body, and now scientists have found evidence that treating it can relieve symptoms of cirrhosis.

The liver filters toxic substances out of the body, but it can become inflamed. When chronic inflammation causes it to scar over, this is called cirrhosis, and it causes inflammation throughout the body. People with cirrhosis have been observed to have decreased cognitive function as a result of brain inflammation. It was initially unsurprising that cirrhosis patients have unusually high rates of gum disease, since both can be caused by smoking and alcohol use, but studies also found higher rates of gum disease in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, suggesting a direct relationship. Bacteria that cause gum disease have also been found in the liver.

Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University investigated whether cirrhosis symptoms would improve if patients received treatment for gum disease. They found that, following treatment, cirrhosis patients had better cognitive function and increased levels of gut bacteria that fight inflammation. While we are awaiting more research, we have another reason to emphasize why it is so important for people to brush and floss regularly and to encourage people to come to our office to get inflamed gums treated.

Have You Had A Cleaning This Year?

Southern Cross Dental encourages all our patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  During the holidays, we want everyone looking forward to the New Year and maintaining great oral hygiene!  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly not just to clean your teeth, but also to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, a hygienist thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist. Come see us for a cleaning to make a great impression during the holidays, and start the year off with your best smile!

Dental Implants

At Southern Cross Dental our doctors replace teeth and restore patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.

An implant is placed over a series of appointments because of the healing time required.  Implants are titanium screws inserted through an incision in the gum. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.

After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second minor procedure.  The doctor may need to expose the head of the implant by removing some gum tissue, and the crown will be screwed to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

Drinking Water for Oral Health

Drinking water is important for your health at all ages.  Southern Cross Dental has seen adult patients that are guilty of not drinking enough water, so we know it can be tough to monitor if kids are getting enough too.  We want to encourage you and the kids in your family to stay hydrated and healthy!

We all know kids love drinking juice and soda, but we forget that these beverages leave unwanted sugar behind on the teeth.  The type of bacteria that causes cavities feeds on sugar, and produces acid that wears away enamel. Enamel is not replaceable, so it’s important to take care of it even from a young age.  When kids drink juice or soda, it is helpful just to drink some water afterwards to dilute acids and wash away food particles and residue. You and your children should be drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water each day.  Drinking tap water with fluoride is important to help prevent cavities.  If you’re worried that your children may not be drinking enough water, come see us to discuss tips that might help them drink more!

Importance of Tartar Control

If you practice poor oral hygiene, you are likely to develop plaque buildup, a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that constantly forms on our teeth along the gum line. Plaque contains bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease and when left untreated, can lead to tartar buildup that only our doctors at Southern Cross Dental will be able to remove.

Because tartar is spongy, it absorbs stains easily. The most common sign of this mineral is a yellow or brown deposit between the lower front teeth or at the gum line. Therefore, if you are a coffee or tea drinker, or a smoker, it is especially important that you prevent tartar buildup. Proper brushing, especially with an American Dental Association (ADA) approved toothpaste, and flossing is necessary to reduce both plaque and tartar buildup. The process for removing tartar is called scaling. During a scaling, a hygienist will use special instruments to remove it.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity can happen to anyone, whether it occurs in one tooth or more. Tooth sensitivity is a common dental problem that involves pain and discomfort in the teeth. Do you wince while eating an ice cream cone or cringe while drinking hot coffee? If so, our doctors at Southern Cross Dental can perform an oral exam, and get to the root of what’s causing your sensitive teeth.

Poor oral care habits are usually the cause of tooth sensitivity but sensitive teeth can also be the result of bruxism, a condition in which the patient grinds his or her teeth. Tooth sensitivity can also arise from periodontal disease. When gums are inflamed, they can cause enamel on the teeth as well as the dentin below to become hypersensitive. Treatment for sensitive teeth may include improving oral care habits, fluoride application, or dental fillings.

Restorative Dental Services

When our doctors at Southern Cross Dental use the term “restorative dentistry,” he or she is referring to the integrated management of oral health problems and restoring the mouth to a functional and esthetic state. Restorative dental procedures may include replacing missing teeth with dental bridges, tooth bonding, crowns, or dentures. The goal of these procedures is to preserve the natural teeth as much as possible.

Once our doctors diagnose your dental condition, they will discuss treatment options with you in detail. If you have missing teeth, dental implants and bridges work best to resemble natural teeth and restore them to their natural function. A dental crown can protect a tooth if dental bonding isn’t strong enough to withstand chewing forces. Restorative dental services as well as cosmetic, have similar properties, both aesthetically fix the problem and revive the tooth back to life.

Veneers Transform Your Smile

If your teeth suffer some undesirable defects, such as being cracked, chipped, or discolored due to stains, you may be a candidate for porcelain veneers. Dental veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials that are designed to cover the front side of teeth. They are an ideal choice if you wish to improve your smile and have become increasingly popular due to their simplicity and versatility and we provide them to Southern Cross Dental patients.

Veneers are an excellent alternative to crowns in many situations because they offer a much more conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color, size or shape. Because dental veneers are an irreversible process, it is critical that you are involved and informed every step of the way. Once the veneers have been placed, one of our doctors will explain the corrective limitations of the procedure.

Teeth Whitening

Everyone likes to be able to present their brightest and whitest smile. At Southern Cross Dental, many patients ask our staff about over the counter products, and have tried them with underwhelming results.  Instead of winging it with retail products, come see us for a consultation and get your own custom whitening system!

During a consultation, your dentist will examine the level of staining on your teeth and be able to tell you what kind of results you can expect from the whitening system. To whiten your teeth at home, you will be fit with custom whitening trays made from molds of your teeth.  For a treatment, apply the whitening gel directly onto the trays and fit them over your teeth.  Your dentist will advise how often you should treat at home and how long each treatment can last.  Following dentist’s instructions, patients have seen this system whiten their smiles 4-8 shades!

Periodontal Maintenance

In its most advanced stages, gum disease can lead to gum recession, and even tooth loss.  Southern Cross Dental wants to make sure it never gets to that point for you and your family!  When plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup, which only leads to more gum recession.  A scaling and root planing procedure is used to treat this buildup and prevent the later stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planning are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure your dentist can perform to help reverse the progress of gum disease.  The procedure beings with scaling, which is the process of the dentist removing plaque from the surface of the teeth, all the way down to the gums. Root planing is the term for any minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root.  When plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that have pulled away will have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to as they heal.

Tooth Abscess

An abscessed tooth is an infection within a tooth that has spread to the root tip or around the root. This infection originates from the tooth’s inner pulp chamber. Prior to the formation of an abscess, the tooth has essentially lost its ability to fight off infection, and bacteria are able to invade the pulp and multiply. As a result, the abscess appears as a collection of pus that is made up of dead white blood cells, tissue debris, and bacteria. Our doctors at Southern Cross Dental can treat this problem when it arises.

There are many causes for a tooth abscess. A very common cause is when a dental cavity becomes so large and deep that if it reaches the pulp chamber where an inflammatory process develops in the tooth. The initial symptoms begin with localized swelling and pain that gets progressively worse over time. A tender and sore mass (abscess) may then be felt with a finger and your gums may bleed.

Pediatric Dentistry

Southern Cross Dental is proud to serve professionals and their families, and we want them to know it’s just as important for their children to have regular dental visits.  A child’s first dental visit should be scheduled when the first baby tooth appears, or around the child’s first birthday.  Baby teeth eventually come out, but their growth and development is important for the overall oral health for the child and the development of their adult teeth.

Baby teeth should be brushed and cared for like adult teeth, and it’s important to monitor their growth and development.  Missing any tooth for too long can change the development of surrounding teeth and compromise the structure of the jaw bone, but regular checkups can keep a child’s tooth development right on track.  Our dentists are skilled and experienced in administering dental care to children.  If your child has seems nervous about seeing a dentist for the first time, we recommend going through a brushing routine with them at home, and talking about the dental visit before you arrive.  Once we get your child’s oral health off to a great start, we offer a full range of services for child patients including dental cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants.

Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

We make dental extractions quick and easy at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs. Usually, a non-surgical extraction can be done in just a few seconds and the empty socket will be healed within days. However, there is a potential complication which can arise in people on certain medications, which is why we want our patients to understand what osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is.

Osteonecrosis is when bone tissue dies. This can occur if bone is exposed to air, which the jawbone is immediately after a tooth is removed, but this situation is usually not dangerous unless the patient is on bisphosphonate medication. Bisphosphonates are used to prevent bone resorption in people with osteoporosis or who are receiving chemotherapy. Almost all known cases of ONJ occurred in chemotherapy patients receiving bisphosphonates through an IV drip.

ONJ is an example of why it is so important for patients to disclose their entire medical and medication history, even for routine procedures. If it occurs, dead bone can be shaved off and treated with anti-bacterial spray, but it is best to avoid scheduling extractions for current chemotherapy patients. If a patient is expected to start chemotherapy, they should discuss with their oncologist whether they have time for dental procedures.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gum Disease

There are many conditions which can affect people’s oral health, and at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, we want our patients to know what they’re up against. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that is common in people with gum disease, and scientists are learning more about why.

A Johns Hopkins study found gum disease in 35% of the general population but 70% of people with RA. While people with difficulty moving their hands might be expected to have higher rates of gum disease due to worse oral hygiene, that’s not the whole story. Gingivitis is common even in people with RA who are still able to brush and floss regularly. For answers, scientists compared the DNA and protein structure of gum tissue and synovium, the lining of the joints. RA causes the immune system to attack synovium, resulting in swelling, and it turned out that synovium and gum tissue share a lot of traits.

RA is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Smoking puts people at increased risk for it. Preliminary studies show that good oral hygiene can still help people with RA to fight gum disease, making it especially important for them to get regular cleanings.

Pediatric Dental Sealants

Children are more prone to cavities than an adult which is why dental sealant is beneficial to them at a young age. Although thorough brushing and flossing will remove food particles from tooth enamel, the toothbrush can’t reach in between the crevices. A dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating that is painted on the surfaces of premolars and molars to prevent tooth decay. Our doctors at Southern Cross Dental can perform this procedure in one short visit.

Dental sealants are usually placed on the chewing surfaces of teeth because these are the areas that have deep grooves where food gets caught. Sealants protect the acidity and sugars in these foods from attacking the gums and enamel. Though it is less common, adults may receive dental sealants too as long as they do not have any pre-existing fillings or sealants.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental will first try to fix it with a filling, crown or other dental treatment. However, when there’s too much damage for the tooth to be repaired, the tooth may need to be removed from its socket in the bone. Though tooth extraction is typically a last resort when all other options fail, we offer this service to eliminate oral discomfort.

There are two different categories of extractions – simple and surgical. A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth. In a simple extraction, the dentist at Southern Cross Dental loosens the tooth with an instrument called an elevator. Then, the dentist uses forceps to remove the tooth. A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure. It is used if a tooth may have broken off at the gum line or has not come into the mouth yet, such as wisdom teeth. During a surgical extraction, the doctor will make a small incision into your gum. Sometimes it’s necessary to remove some of the bone around the tooth or to cut the tooth in half in order to extract it.

If you have questions or concerns regarding tooth extraction, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.scdsmile.com for more information. Fixed Bridges

People who need new caps for their teeth are in good hands at Southern Cross Dental. We provide fixed bridges as well as individual crowns. Since bridges are one of many restorative options out there, we wanted to explain why they’re sometimes the best option.

Bridges are multiple crowns linked together. Although some are supported by implants, they are often attached to existing teeth. The natural teeth are reshaped (after the patient has been numbed and sedated) into cylinders, and the outer crowns of the bridge are cemented over them. Dentists usually avoid reshaping crowns unless necessary, but it is commonly done with crowns that are badly eroded or ground down.

While implants replace natural tooth roots, bridges allow them to remain in place. This allows the jaw bone to maintain some stability, eliminates the risk of the patient having an allergic reaction to the metal, and provides the bridge with a healthier, more resilient base. Because a bridge is irremovable, it is brushed like natural teeth, but it cannot be flossed. When properly maintained, bridges can last for over ten years.

Manual vs. Electric Toothbrushes

When people want to brush their teeth better, we at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs are happy to teach them how. There is a wide variety of dental products out there, but which ones are effective often depend on the user’s knowledge of them. This is best exemplified by the choice between electric and manual toothbrushes.

Electric toothbrushes have the advantage of taking less time and requiring less hand movement. Compared to manual toothbrushes that are used properly, they are not known to be more effective at preventing tooth decay. But to use a manual toothbrush properly, a person must thoroughly scrub every tooth surface for at least two minutes.

The expense of an electric toothbrush may not just be due to its motor. Many are now equipped with Bluetooth technology and can be linked to apps on a phone. These apps include records of a patient’s brushing habits that will inform them if they consistently miss a spot, warnings if a patient is brushing too hard, and children’s games that reward them for completing their daily hygiene routine. While a manual toothbrush is sufficient for most people’s needs, an electric toothbrush could be a great help to people with limited motor control or who have had a very difficult time making good brushing into a habit.

Flossing Properly

At Southern Cross Dental, we want to see the families we provide for continue healthy oral care routines at home.  Regular flossing is essential to maintaining oral health and you should floss once a day, either before or after brushing. Remember these tips to floss effectively:

  • ·        A strand of dental floss about 18 inches long allows you to wrap the ends of the floss around a finger on each hand. This gives you excellent control over the portion of floss you are using.

  • ·        The proper technique to flossing is sliding the floss between the teeth and rubbing the floss back and forth up until you reach your gums.

  • ·        Pushing at your gums too hard with floss can damage your gum line and isn’t necessary to floss properly. Gently rub the floss up to one gum, then down and back up towards the other.

  • ·        As you move on to the next tooth, adjust the floss to expose an unused portion. Repeat this rubbing motion between each tooth and dispose of the floss once you are finished.

Losing the First Tooth

If your kid is turning into a big kid, losing the first baby tooth is on the horizon.  It’s an exciting sign of growing up, but many kids still feel anxious or uncomfortable dealing with the unfamiliar sensation of a loose tooth.  Southern Cross Dental wants kids and parents to be prepared and understand why this pain occurs so your child can still have a positive tooth loss experience.

Before a baby tooth is lost, it begins to break free of its nerve endings.  This is the natural process that makes the tooth feel loose and wobbly at the gums, and the area will become swollen and red.  It can be painful, and for kids a great way to soothe tooth pain is applying a cold compress to the outside of the mouth in the affected area.  Children may complain that they find it hard to bite or chew with loose or missing teeth.  It’s still important to keep eating healthy while they grow new teeth so encourage soup, pureed fruits, and cooked vegetables.  A few tales of the tooth fairy can usually ease the pain a little, too!

Sjögren’s Syndrome

Dry mouth is a major problem for oral health. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, we want to help patients to manage this condition so it doesn’t lead to the spread of bacteria and fungi. In order to do that, patients should understand how dry mouth can be caused by a disease called Sjögren’s syndrome.

Sjögren’s syndrome is a disease in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue throughout the body, beginning the saliva and tear glands. It most often occurs in older women who also have other autoimmune disorders such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and can be triggered by a trauma or prolonged stress. Dry mouth has major implications for oral health because saliva is necessary for washing away food debris and maintaining a healthy balance of acidity. Without it, bacteria and fungi grow out of control, causing bad breath and dental decay. Infections agents could even be inhaled or enter the bloodstream through lesions in the gums.

To test for Sjögren’s syndrome, dentists will refer a patient for a biopsy. During the procedure, a doctor will pluck a few saliva glands from the patient’s lip. (We have hundreds of saliva glands and the absence of a few should not make a difference). If a patient tests positive, they may be recommended for medication that will stimulate saliva production. They may also try sugar-free gum or candy to increase saliva flow or apply artificial saliva in the form of a spray.

White Spot Lesions

Usually, people are happy to have white teeth, but they’re a lot less pleased by glazed or chalky-looking white spots. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, we can assist patients with this issue and hope they will come to see us because a white spot is the first sign of a developing lesion.

Glazed white spots on teeth are caused by acid damaging the enamel. This can be observed on the upper back molars of people who frequently suffer from acid reflux. Elsewhere in the mouth, they are likely to be caused by bacterial infection. As bacteria feeds, it secretes acid which gets stuck to the teeth. As the decay progresses, the white spot will eventually become a caries or cavity. This is most likely to occur near the gum line, on the sides of the teeth, or anywhere else that is difficult to brush, such as near an orthodontic bracket.

It can take as few as thirty days for a white spot to form. Their appearance is an immediate sign that a patient needs to improve their brushing or be left with scared teeth. We can assess whether a white spot still has an active infection. If not, we may be able to provide mineralization therapy or cover the spot with bonding or a veneer.

What is the ADA Seal?

The American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance program began in 1931 and to this day, dentists and consumers recognize it as the gold standard when it comes to evaluating the safety and efficiency of dental products. Some people purchase their oral care products based off of this seal, and you are likely to find a toothbrush or floss from our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in your take-home bag after a dental appointment.

Not every dental product possesses the ADA seal of approval, but this doesn’t mean that it won’t get the job done. When a product has the ADA seal of approval, this just means that the company selling the product may or may not have submitted their product for review. There are thousands of products on store shelves from white strips, to flossers, and toothbrushes, that can help protect your mouth and prevent oral diseases.

If you have further questions regarding the ADA Seal of approval or ADA dental products, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. Benefits of a Custom-Fitted Mouthguard

Mouthguards are very versatile. They provide damage control for those who grind and clench the teeth, athletes with an increased risk of dental injuries, and to reduce snoring from sleep apnea. At Southern Cross Dental, we offer custom-fitted mouthguards to our patients for ultimate comfort and protection.

Mouthguards can be used by anyone but are most beneficial for those who play contact sports. Those who play hockey, soccer, football, or basketball, pose a higher risk of dental injury and trauma and a mouthguard provides a barrier to protect them from these problems. A custom-fitted mouthguard will also benefit a “bruxer” who grinds their teeth and risks wearing down tooth enamel. If you’ve ever considered a mouthguard, our doctors will discuss what is best for you.

If you have further questions regarding mouthguards, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.southerncrossfamilydentistry.com for more information. Sectioning Teeth during Extractions

Sometimes, tooth extractions are necessary for preserving the health of the rest of the mouth. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, we’re committed to making the extraction process as easy on the patient as possible, which is why we sometimes cut teeth into sections while removing them.

Molars have to be anchored firmly in the mouth in order to withstand the forces people put on them while chewing. The lower molars have two roots; the upper ones have three. They are fastened with strong ligaments and cannot always be removed with the rocking motions used while pulling or elevating other teeth. Attempts to move them through brute force could hurt the patient or cause the molar to break apart too early. This is especially likely to happen with the wisdom teeth, which are the largest, most firmly anchored, and most likely to be caught under the gum line and not have a large enough opening to be pulled through.

Sectioning occurs after the patient has been numbed. A steady stream of water keeps the mouth cool while the dentist cuts the tooth into sections using a drill. The individual sections do not require as much force to move and can be pulled through smaller openings in the gum pockets.

Vertical Dimension Loss

Teeth serve many functions, one of the most underappreciated of which is supplying the face with vertical dimension. Put simply, this means that without teeth, the face shortens, resulting in all sorts of problems. At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, our doctors are experienced providers of dental prosthetics and are determined to help patients avoid the horrors of bite collapse.

When teeth are removed, the jaw bone tissue that surrounded their tooth roots recedes. As a result, the face looks shrunken, with the skin between the nose and lip becoming wrinkled and the mouth looking too small for the chin. Besides this aged appearance, patients also develop pain in their jaws which can radiate to their heads and shoulders. The loss of teeth also impacts the function of the remaining ones, since the front teeth are not held in place as firmly as the molars and are unable to take on the pressures of chewing.

If a patient still has some teeth, our dentists can use them to estimate how large to make the replacements. In cases of full-mouth restorations, our dentists will fabricate dentures using the latest software to determine a good fit. As part of the restoration process, patients will wear temporary crowns, which will give us a better idea of whether their new teeth are the right size to restore the shape of their faces.

Digital X-rays

At Southern Cross Dental, we are proud to utilize the latest the advances in dental technology at our practice. Technology has come a long way since film X-rays and digital X-rays offer more benefits to patients now more than ever. Digital X-rays offer 70% less radiation to patients, less discomfort, and they help detect problems much sooner.

Dental X-rays are a very important part of your dental visit because they are necessary to help diagnose problems that are undetected by the naked eye. Our digital X-ray system is designed with the patient in mind and is much more sensitive to radiation. Additional patient advantages include avoidance of chemical processing errors, which means that our doctors will be able to take a closer look at the teeth and surrounding structures with astounding accuracy.

Importance of Healthy Gums

By taking care of your oral health, you are doing your oral cavity the ultimate favor. Having a healthy mouth means that teeth are clean and free of debris, your gums are pink and do not hurt or bleed when you brush or floss, and bad breath is not a constant problem. Our doctors at Southern Cross Dental are here to help you maintain healthy gums with routine cleanings.

When you have healthy gums, your teeth are well supported by the tissue in your gums and your chances for long-term oral health are significantly increased. Because periodontal disease is linked to an increased susceptibility to systemic disease (bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease), it is important to prevent it as well as control it. Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly is important and helps remove the thin film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth each day and contributes to tooth decay. If you need assistance maintaining a daily oral hygiene routine, give our office a call today.

Oral Cancer

Southern Cross Dental takes a lot of pride in serving the families from our community.  We want your smiles to look great, but we also screen for oral cancer and it is important that you and your family are aware of oral cancer and how to prevent it.  Oral cancer screening may not be the most common reason you’ve visited a dentist, but regular screenings are the best way to protect yourself.

Heavy smoking and drinking do increase the risk of oral cancer, but oral cancer can still occur if someone never smokes.  The human papilloma virus (HPV) was recently found to be responsible for most oral cancers that originated in the back of the mouth.  Because there is no way to predict cancer, you should ask about an oral cancer screening with each dental checkup.  Your dentist will conduct a visual exam to see any irregularities inside the mouth. Always contact us if you notice any inexplicable pain, swelling, or numbness in your throat or jaw.

To learn more about oral cancer screening and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.scdsmile.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.

Importance of Regular Cleanings

At Southern Cross Dental we want patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  The Academy of General Dentistry recommends you have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months.  However much you brush and floss your own teeth, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

There are many risks associated with impacted wisdom teeth, which are the last set of molars to develop as adults. When wisdom teeth are impacted, this simply means that they are lying dormant beneath the gum and they are not going to erupt anytime soon. When wisdom teeth are impacted, our doctors at Southern Cross Dental recommended extraction to protect the surrounding teeth and avoid infection.

Impacted wisdom teeth don’t always show symptoms, so it’s important to diligently visit our office twice a year for oral exams and dental X-rays. Doing so, allows our doctors to determine how the wisdom teeth are growing. Impacted wisdom teeth can result in pain, damage to surrounding teeth, as well as other dental problems like periodontal disease or gum infection. Extraction is best to avoid these complications.

If you have further questions regarding wisdom teeth or wisdom teeth extraction, please give us a call. Reasons for Filling Failure

At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, we supply fillings that are long-lasting and naturally-colored to give patients the smiles they deserve. However, it is possible in some circumstances for fillings to fail prematurely, and scientists have recently released a new study that determines why.

The expected lifespan of a filling is about ten years. But the study found that in smokers and people who heavily drank alcohol, fillings were significantly likelier to fail after just two years. The study also found that filling failure tends to run in families. Scientists speculated about which genes might be responsible for this, but the lesson is that people from families with a history of bad dental health need to be especially attentive to their oral hygiene and to maintaining regular dental check-ups.

Each time our patients see us, we assess the durability of their fillings so they can be removed and replaced before any problems arise. One piece of good news from the study is that white fillings attached with bonding are just as effective as the old amalgam ones made of mercury and silver. This means that patients are sacrificing anything by going with the better-looking option.

National Children's Dental Health Month

We treat patients of all ages at Southern Cross Dental and are proud members of the American Dental Association (ADA). Each year, the ADA designates February as National Children’s Dental Health Month. This year’s theme is the proper use of fluoridated toothpaste, so we wanted to help educate our patients about it.

Fluoridated toothpaste provides additional protection against tooth decay. It works according to the same principle as water fluoridation and the fluoride topical treatments we provide pediatric patients. It is essential for children to brush their teeth properly, or else the pain from tooth decay can disrupt their sleep and eating habits and cause speech development delays. When children do brush their teeth, they are learning to take responsibility for their own health, which will bring a lifetime of benefits.

Brushing should be done with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Each session should last for two minutes, during which the brusher covers each tooth surface, as well as their tongue. The toothpaste should be spat out afterward since excessive fluoride intake can discolor the teeth. Fluoride toothpaste should also not be used on mouth guards or other oral appliances.

In-Office Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is often called nature’s cavity fighter and there is a reason for this. If children and adults are prone to cavities, this naturally-occurring mineral helps prevent cavities by making the enamel more resistant to the acidity that causes tooth decay. At Southern Cross Dental, our doctors can administer fluoride in topical form.

In our office, fluoride can be applied directly to the teeth through a gel, foam, or a rinse. Fluoride has the ability to repair teeth in the very early stages of tooth decay. It’s additionally used as a preventive measure in children to keep cavities from forming. Depending on the patient’s oral health status, fluoride treatments may be recommended every three, six, or 12 months. General treatment takes just a few minutes but you will not be allowed to eat for at least 30 minutes afterward. If you are anticipating a fluoride treatment, don’t come to the office hungry!

Dangers of Dental Plaque

Our doctors at Southern Cross Dental have a request. Run your tongue over your teeth right now. Do they feel squeaky clean or do they feel fuzzy? If you feel a layer of build-up on your tooth enamel, this is the plaque and it should be removed on a daily basis. If plaque isn’t adequately removed through preventive oral hygiene practices, the bacteria will linger and eventually lead to periodontal disease and oral systemic conditions.

If you neglect your teeth, plaque will begin to build-up on the teeth. If you don’t remove plaque within 48 hours, it will harden into tartar, which only our doctors will be able to remove. If your gums are sensitive and bleeding, this means that tartar has already made its way below the gum line. Because periodontal disease can be detrimental to your overall health, treatment of this condition can reduce inflammation in the body as well as the gums.

Oral Cancer and Alcohol

As part of our preventive services, we at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs provide our patients with information on the causes of oral cancer and screen them for early warning signs. Recently the American Society of Clinical Oncology released a study on the connection between oral cancer and alcohol which we wanted our patients to be aware of.

Past studies have established that alcohol and tobacco together raise the risk of oral cancer, but this study examined alcohol as a causative agent in its own right. It found that 5% of new cancer diagnoses, including oral cancer, can be attributed to alcohol. The researchers said they were unsure of why alcohol would lead to oral cancer, but it could be that alcohol causes damage to soft tissues in the mouth. Each time the tissues repair, there is an opportunity for DNA to be miscopied.

The research found that the risk factor did not vary depending on what kind of alcohol was consumed, and although it was greater for heavy drinkers, it was still significant for light and moderate drinkers. It also found that, although the risks for every kind of cancer did not decrease with the cessation of alcohol use, the risk of cancers of the mouth and throat did decline.

Diabetes and Implants

At Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, people with diabetes are able to get the specialized dental care their particular needs require. People with diabetes are more vulnerable to oral infections than other people, which for a long time caused dentists to question their candidacy for implant placement. However, a new study from the American Dental Association found that people with diabetes may be able to receive this kind of treatment.

People with diabetes take longer to recover from wounds. In the past, this caused dentists to be concerned about the surgical incisions which need to be made for implants to be placed. However, the process of integration between the implant post and the jaw bone takes several months, during which the gums should heal if they are cared for properly. People with uncontrolled blood sugar are also prone to gum inflammation and inflammation tends to be associated with implant failure in a process called peri-implantitis. But the study published by the American Dental Association found that people with uncontrolled blood sugar do not actually experience implant failure at a higher rate than the general population. This does not mean that the additional risks presented by diabetes should be ignored, but if the health of the gums is maintained, implants may be a safe option.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is an excellent way to repair teeth that have been chipped, cracked, or broken, and restore them back to their natural function. Dental bonding is a procedure in which one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental will place a tooth-colored resin material to an impaired tooth, and harden the material with a special light. This procedure only takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete and is a cost-efficient way to enhance one’s smile.

Dental bonding is additionally used to improve the appearance of discolored teeth, to close gaps between teeth, and as a cosmetic alternative to amalgam (silver) fillings. Dental bonding has cosmetic properties but is also used to restore and protect teeth from further damage. There is little to no preparation needed for a dental bonding appointment and anesthesia is often unnecessary. If you have teeth that could use a little enhancement, explore your options, today.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental bonding, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.scdsmile.com for more information. Filling a Cavity

If you neglect your teeth long enough, you will suffer the consequences and one of those consequences may be a cavity. Cavities are a form of tooth decay that leaves holes in the teeth caused by sugars and harmful acids that can wear down enamel. If you have a cavity, one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental will need to fill it. Fillings come in a variety of materials that can be discussed during your dental appointment.

The type of filling that is best for you will be determined by your dentist, but the most popular are tooth-colored fillings. Tooth-colored fillings are designed to match the shape and color of the tooth and blends in with the rest of the teeth. To fill a cavity, our doctor will first remove the decayed portion of the tooth and clean the infected area. The cavity will then be filled with the material that you and the doctor have decided on. It’s more painful to live with a cavity than it is to receive a filling. Fillings can protect the teeth from further damage.

If you have questions or concerns regarding tooth decay or dental fillings, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.scdsmile.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, call 719-471-1717.
