How to Care for Dentures

The office of Southern Cross Dental in Colorado Springs often provides patients with full and partial dentures. These restorative devices bring great improvement to patients’ lives, but they must be cared for properly.

Dentures have neither the ability to protect themselves, like natural teeth, nor the durability of retainers. Lacking the film natural teeth produce, dentures can be scratched by the minerals in standard toothpaste much more easily, and should only be cleaned with paste made specifically for dentures. They need to be kept in water or a cleaning solution when they are not being worn, but they will warp if placed in hot water. Patients should never attempt to repair dentures on their own and they should seek professional help at the first sign a denture no longer fits properly.

Though dentures require special toothpaste, patients should continue to brush their gums and tongue normally. Soft-bristled toothbrushes are the best tool for cleaning both prosthetics and the natural parts of the mouth. If a patient has implant-supported dentures, the abutments should also be kept clean.
