April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Hearing the word cancer, especially when it comes to you or a loved one is a frightening feeling. These days it seems that anything can cause cancer, but the risk is especially higher for those who partake in heavy alcohol consumption or tobacco use.  At Southern Cross Dental, we are celebrating oral cancer awareness month, which is why we want to educate you on the signs, symptoms, and treatment for this condition.

Oral cancer typically appears as a growth or a sore in the mouth that does not go away after a matter of weeks. However, we don’t encourage you to wait weeks if you notice a red or white patch of skin that is causing you pain. The most common symptoms of oral cancer include a lump or thickening in the cheek, a sore throat or the feeling that something is caught in the throat. In our office, we provide patients with oral cancer screening to detect cancer in its earliest stage when it is easiest to treat. It’s important to visit us every six months to reduce your chances of developing these symptoms. Treatment will depend on the patient, but radiation therapy and surgery are common methods of treating oral cancer.

If you are worried that you might be a candidate for oral cancer, please give us a call.
